    Backbreaker Football

    by NaturalMotion

Backbreaker Football is your bargain basement option. You can run the app on both your iPhone and iPad for only $0.99. The gameplay is far more limited than Madden and can get old pretty quickly. However, the graphics are fantastic. The app itself is well-designed and of high quality. Backbreaker Football is a no-brainer at $0.99, but not a true replacement for Madden NFL 11.

    PlayMaker Football

    by PlayMaker Software, Inc.

PlayMaker Football is the must-have game for folks who want to act as the coach in their video games. You set up your plays and rosters, but you do not play the game like you would in other more traditional games. It is not a perfect game, but it continues to get updates that improve it. If you are curious and want to try your hand at coaching, it might be a fun one to pick up.

    Pocket Passer QB

    by Big Toe Productions

Pocket Passer is an arcade-style football game. You flick a football to kick or pass instead of running around with it. The gameplay is fun and will keep you entertained for hours. The price is fantastic and it can be played on your iPhone too. Pocket Passer is a fun one to pick up, but not a replacement for Madden.

    Flick Kick Field Goal

    by PikPok

Flick Kick Field Goal is another flicking football game for the iPad and iPhone. The gameplay is limited to just field goals, which is a disappointment. The graphics are fantastic and Game Center support is included. If you are going to pick up a flick-style football game, we would recommend Pocket Passer instead of this one.

    NFL 2011 HD

    by Gameloft

NFL 2011 HD is the biggest competitor to the Madden game. The price point is only $4.99, but you do get what you pay for. The game started off great, but it has not been optimized for the newer iOS updates and as a result is very crash prone. We want to love this game, but until Gameloft updates it for stability, it cannot be recommended. The game is still at version 1.0, which is not a good sign for an app that has been out for over four months. Save your $4.99 and put it towards the essential Madden 11 for iPad.
