This AppGuide will take users through different applications that offer real time traffic maps to alleviate the headaches associated with traffic congestion.
If sitting in traffic is your idea of fun, then this app is not for you. Sigalert is the foremost provider of accurate, up to date traffic maps and has saved this writer on numerous occasions. Most apps update periodically, but Siaglert's information is concurrent with both state highway patrol's and uses road sensors for accurate readings. The interface is very user friendly and provides accident, construction and other relevant traffic data for most metropolitan areas. The maps within the application are zoomable, clickable and can even provide accurate speeds for each exit along the highway. Sigalert even will estimate travel times for given destinations based on speed and traffic. Sigalert.com even offers a premium service for those looking for customizable routes, but with the free version, you should have more information than you can shake a stick at. More areas are added to their system every month and makes this app the king of the traffic apps.

Waze has the right idea. Integrate the buddy system and the rest will follow. This app, not only can be used as a turn by turn navigator but also displays user generated reports on traffic, construction and speed traps. When you open the application you are greeted with a status; you first start out as a novice user and work your way up to a full fledged traffic expert. The application is similar to a game as you can accrue points for miles driven and reports given. Its like Foursquare but for driving. One great thing about this application is that it adapts to both your driving and the surrounding traffic. In essence the user is treated to one of the most accurate driving tools. The app can calculate your commute to work, offer alternate routes and will notify you of incidents that are happening both on your route and in the surrounding areas. The reason this is not an essential app is that the user base is not quite there and there is no integration with any government traffic source. In time, this app will become very useful.
