KAYAK
by kayak.com
I travel a lot, sometimes every week, but I don't have a fat trust fund to support my wanderlust. So, I have to make sure I'm getting the best deals on flights. Kayak is amazing. It pulls flight listings from every major online travel agent site and mixes and matches the best itineraries to get you from Point A to Point B. Compare prices, times, layovers, and other travel minutiae and book your ideal flight in app. Additional features include a flight tracker, baggage fees reference, and airport info. Kayak also has hotel and car rental deals, but I've found their deals don't match the deals on Priceline and Hotwire.

Priceline Hotel & Car Negotiator
by priceline.com
If you use Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" feature correctly, you will get amazing hotel deals. My friend used this feature to get a room in the Sofitel in Paris for $150 (compared to its regular rate of $350). It's a great feature and worth downloading the app for if you want a deal. However, the downside of the Priceline iPad app is it does not include its rental car deals (only the iPhone version does). That said, the app is easy to use and handy when making travel plans.

Amtrak
by Amtrak
Amtrak is America's major railroad company. It goes to every major city and is a great alternative to driving or taking the bus. Book and modify reservations with this app and track arrival times. At the moment, it looks like the last update has created a few glitches with the train tracker, but overall, it's a useful app for travelers.

HopStop Transit Directions for iPad
by HopStop.com
Going to a major city? Save some money and go green by taking advantage of public transportation. Get detailed bus, subway, taxi, and walking directions in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. A nice detail HopStop has is its calorie calculator (if you're walking or biking) and a calculator for how much carbon emissions you're saving. Unlike the Maps app that comes with the iPad, HopStop can store a map (e.g. a subway map) so you can refer to it without WiFi.

Airbnb
by Airbnb, Inc.
As someone who travels all the time and hops on a plane at the drop of a hat, I am obsessed with Airbnb. Save hundreds of dollars on travel costs by renting a home from a homeowner. Airbnb makes every home into a potential bed & breakfast or a temporary residence. From luxury accommodations (e.g. Spanish villa) to cheap rooms perfect for backpackers (e.g. $20/night rooms in the UK), there are options abound. Sign up for free, browse through the thousands of listings, and read reviews from previous travelers.

TripAdvisor Hotels Flights Restaurants
by TripAdvisor LLC
TripAdvisor is one of the most popular and reliable travel review websites out there. Their iPad app takes all the things that make TripAdvisor a great reference guide for hotels and condenses them into a handy app. Look up reviews by searching for the location or turn on your GPS to see what's around you. The app lets you see ratings and reviews for hotels, restaurants, and activities as well as book hotels. However, I personally find their hotel reviews the most useful. Restaurant and activity reviews are more reliable on sites like Yelp and you'll get a better hotel deal by booking rooms through Hotwire.

Oyster Hotel Reviews and Photos
by Oyster.com
It's hard to trust most hotel review sites because lots of them are trying to earn a buck by selling you a location. Oyster Hotel Reviews and Photos is completely candid and honest. In other words, don't book a hotel without looking up its review on Oyster first. The reviews are incredibly accurate. If a hotel is kitschy and overrated, Oyster will say so. Another great feature that comes with using this app is its selection of photo galleries. Unlike most review and hotel booking apps, Oyster has gobs of undoctored pictures of every inch of the hotel. From toilets to the lobby, see exactly what to expect with your stay.

Google Translate
by Google
Automated translation programs are never perfect, but Google's algorithm is one of the best (and this is coming from a linguist!). Traveling to another country can be difficult on its own, but being surrounded by a language you don't know can be extra stressful. Google Translate lets you translate text between every major language, has speech recognition, and (bonus!) lets you star your favorite searches. Another feature that makes this translation app great for travel is its offline capabilities: access your translation history without a WiFi connection.
