Discover New Movies, Games And Music With Cover

March 27, 2014

Cover - Discover Movies, Games & Music (Free) by Soriko is a simple little app to help you discover something new to keep yourself entertained. If you’re always on the lookout for new stuff to discover, then Cover could help you out.

While I’ve grown more or less into a routine, I enjoy finding new forms of entertainment that are readily available to me for try out. Whether it’s a new movie I never heard of, a video game that is worth playing, or a new album to relax with, I’m up for it. That’s why I was interested in Cover when I found it in the App Store, but I’ve actually found it a little too simple for my tastes.

When you launch the app, you are greeted with a simple screen that looks similar to what you would find in the iOS App Store. This will be filled with one scrolling ticker section, as well as five blocks that consist of other lists underneath it. The scrolling ticker will automatically go through seven different lists, which are different from the ones underneath. Each of these curated lists will have a nice graphic to go with them, so you know what to expect.

Tap on one of these sections to view a list of recommended items that correspond with an overall theme. So far, Cover has a nice bit of variety in these themes, with some stuff for “Harry Potter,” “James Bond,” and “The Hobbit,” along with more general topics like “Upcoming Release,” “7 Movie Classics,” “5 Most Played on Spotify,” and more. If you’re looking at one of the themed catalogs, the list will have different sections to differentiate movies, games, and music. Each item in a list will also have an icon to make it easy to tell what category the item falls under at-a-glance.

Tapping on an item allows you to view information about the title, such as a synopsis and release date for movies and games, artist information for music, and available platforms (for games, of course). You can even watch trailers for movies and games, and hear snippets of songs from the iTunes Store. Tapping on information like Artist will show you more of their stuff directly in the app. You can share your new discovery with friends, too.

If you’re interested in something specific, Cover can help you out with that too. Just tap on the magnifying glass to bring up a search screen for looking up media. You can view each category separately, with recommendations of what is popular at the moment in each. Type in what you’re looking for in the search bar above, and then select the media type that you want to view results in.

I found that the search in Cover was pretty slow, because it would take a few moments before it caught up to me, especially if I switched media types. In this area, it just seemed a little unresponsive, which I found rather annoying. I hope that the developer optimizes the app more in the future.

I’m not sure what the point of looking up media is, though. Since this app is about discovery, why would I be looking stuff up that I already know of? Perhaps it would work better with keywords, but it doesn’t seem to even do that very well. And there is no way to add items to your own kind of list in the app, which I would like to see in the future, rather than have to depend on another app for this task.

I was looking forward to discovering a lot of stuff in Cover, but I’m pretty disappointed. The lists are nice, but I want more of them. I hope that the developers are in the process of adding more lists in the future. It would also be nice if there was a community behind it all, where users could create their own curated lists to share with other users. In the current state, the app is pretty limited.

Still, I think Cover is worth a download just because you will find a few things from these lists that you will want to check out. However, it currently doesn’t have enough content to really keep user interest for long, so I hope that this will be fixed in the future. But for the price of free, it doesn’t hurt to give it a try.

You can find Cover – Discover Movies, Games & Music on the iPhone App Store for free.
