UPDATE #2 (8/1)

Well folks, in another weird turn of events, Nullriver’s NetShare app appeared yet again earlier this afternoon in iTunes and was available for download (where yours truly was able to pick-up a copy).

Several hours later, however, NetShare went missing. . . YET AGAIN.

From the developer’s site:

Apple has taken it down again, with no explanation yet again. Update: NetShare is now back up and available from the AppStore! We’re not quite sure why Apple took down the NetShare application yet, we’ve received no communication from Apple thus far. NetShare did not violate any of the Developer or AppStore agreements. We’re hoping we’ll get some feedback from Apple today. Sorry to all the folks that couldn’t get it in time. We’ll do our best to try to get the application back onto the AppStore if at all possible. At the very least, we hope Apple will allow it to be used in countries where the provider does permit tethering.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest as we unravel Apple’s reasoning behind Netshare being pulled, relisted, and pulled again…

UPDATE #1 (8/1)

Maksim Rogov at Nullriver got in touch with us about the situation, saying:

We’re trying to get a hold of Apple right now. Until we hear from Apple, its hard to say what the real reason is, because, if it was AT&T, well, AT&T is not the iPhone service provider outside the US.

We were also directed to the NullRiver Website for additional information. Thanks to Maksim and the NullRiver team for taking time out of their busy schedules to give us an update.

Nullriver, Inc. released NetShare onto the iTunes App Store earlier this evening. Priced at $9.99, NetShare basically allows you to share an iPhone’s 3G / EDGE internet connection with other devices such as your laptop. The application was live for less than an hour before being pulled by the powers that be (read: Apple).

It is unclear as to how the application made it through Apple’s stringent review process in the first place, as it violates AT&T’s terms and conditions.

The few lucky ones who bought the application during its short span of availability are reporting that NetShare works like a charm.

  1. Awww, I was looking for something just like this. Darned Apple.

  2. Hopefully the few lucky ones will crack it…

  3. Someone already posted a tutorial on how to use it: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5950329

  4. removed :-(

  5. So what if its against AT&T terms of service! They aren’t the only carrier in the world. Many carriers allow tethering.

  6. maybe its just taken off the U.S. app store because of AT&T policy. can anyone in another country help?

  7. it’s not in the german app store either, not sure if it’s ever been though

  8. i’m in Canada and its not available here either.

  9. I’m in Australia & it’s not here either. Damn it guys, we pay for every kb of data here in Australia and have no such thing as “unlimited” data plans. This would make the iPhone ever so much more useful!

  10. Not on the AppStore in the UK either… not sure it ever has been though..
Shame.. this could be very useful!

  11. It was listed on the UK store last night, but when I tried to buy it (from the iPhone) I got an “App no longer available” message window.

  12. Can we buy it directly fron Nullriver?

  13. Actually, I think the AT&T agreement lets them charge you for their data/computer plan if they “determine” that you are so using any phone you own…

  14. Hey I just downloaded it, it’s back up. Go go go…

  15. It is…didn’t find it in Search, but it is in the Productivity section…

  16. I was able to find it in search, but others are saying they can’t. So weird, but who cares I got it now!

  17. atleast its still downloadable in Sweden.

  18. Hi, I’m back and can tell you I just bought it in the Australia store for $12.99

  19. It’s available in Japan, 1,200yen.

  20. no, it’s not available in japan.

  21. Lucky I bought it when I did because it looks like it’s been pulled off the OZ store :-)

  22. Sad situation. Here in Switzerland you have 1GB included each month, and you simply pay if you need more. It would be quite okay with my provider i would say, since they could obviously make more money.

I’m really looking for a way to send files from my macbook through my iphone. How come i can’t even upload a file to my iphone and sent it as mail attachment from there? The only solution i’m left with is putting my sim card in my previous mobile phone and do it fom there!

What a disapointment… Apple usually makes things nice for the users… This is against good sense.

  23. If we travel outside the US can we install this software on our iPhone or is there a lock on US registered iPhones?

  24. hay i need help how i get to my sim cart contacts thing you

  25. I heard here in Canada from the Rogers provider that if they find out that you are using their data plan for anything other than the iphone (and the guy I spoke with claims they can do it), they will charge you $0.05/kb (i.e., $50,000/Gig)… I doubt there is any country out there worse than Canada… Apple is not innocent either; they make lucrative deals to give companies monopolies over distributing their product which of course these companies then abuse to their advantage. Apple is the perpetrator of all this. They are hardly good guys. Unfortunately they just make desirable hardware that we must buy, must buy, must buy…

  26. i know my carrier lets you do the tethering, infact it encourages it, since they get more money. AT&T are dumb asses

  27. Guys, you don’t need any extra programs to achieve this functionality. If you have a jailbroken iphone, here is what you do on windows ( although the same can almost certainly be done on a mac ):

    1. Create adhoc wireless network, call it anything you like, lets say “modem”
    2. Connect iphones wifi to this adhoc network, “modem”
    3. Run ssh server on iphone
    4. Open an ssh tunnel to the iphone ala “ssh -ND 22 root@”
    5. After typing the password, it will appear that the ssh window is hung… that is GOOD!
    6. Minimize that ssh window, and now open firefox, pidgin, etc….
    7. In the program you’re using, go to the connection settings, and choose the SOCKS 5 proxy with localhost as the proxy server and 22 as the proxy port.
    8. Thats it! Now you are successfully tethering your internet connection.

I came up with these instructions after noticing that there was a jailbroken app, IPhoneModem, that works in conjunction with the mac app, IPhoneModem…. seeing as how i don’t own a mac, i set out to figure out what IPhoneModem is doing under the hood… its not exactly the same, but i prefer this method, because no extra software needs to be installed.

FYI: This drains battery BIG TIME… i was surfing for maybe 2 hours on a full battery and it was pretty much dead afterwards… thats what happens when you are using 3G, SSH, and WIFI all simultaneously

  28. bah the ip address didn’t show because i had it contained in left and right arrows… step 4 should say “ssh -ND 22 root@169.254.21.38” ( replace 169…38 with whatever your iphones wifi ip address is )

Also, im not able to figure out a way to get windows to use this proxy for ALL internet connections, which would be ideal as fuck… anybody got a clue as to how to do that?

    Thanks,

  29. Just returning to say I’ve now jailbroken my mobile phone, installed PdaNet, and it works. The simple way… I must add that tethering is the only reason why i eventually did jail break it. Just so Apple doesn’t come to me and complain, should they, one day :)
