If you have used Installer.app in the past, Cydia should look somewhat familiar and be fairly straightforward to use.
Here’s a basic walkthrough to help you navigate through and get the most out of Cydia.
NOTE: This only works on jailbroken phones, see our 3G Jailkbreak Tutorials for Mac Users & Windows Users.
1. Click the spiffy new Cydia icon on your Springboard
You’ll see loading while it updates the sources and loads the welcome screen.
2. Upgrade Cydia
From here if you haven’t run Cydia in a while, or this is your first time running, you may get a notice about ‘Essential upgrades’. These are upgrades to the Cydia application itself that may be required for installing new packages and apps:
- Press Upgrade Essential
- Press Confirm to begin the download and install
- Wait for Complete and press Close Window
- Press the home key, and then re-open Cydia to continue
NOTE: After installing essential upgrades, it’s always a good idea to restart Cydia to make sure the new packages are reloaded. Repeat Step 1 to open Cydia again (though you probably already guessed that).
3. Update Applications
If you’ve installed applications previously you may see a numbered notification next to the “Changes” menu. This indicates that there are updates available for currently installed applications. For our walkthrough I’ll update the NES emulator I downloaded a couple of days ago.
To update applications:
- Press Changes
- Press Upgrade All (#) [top right of screen]
- Press Confirm to begin download and installation
You’ll notice on the last shot that NES has disappeared from the list and the notification
(red 1) on the changes option has been removed.
NOTE: Changes also contains applications that have recently been added or changed, this is a good place to go to find new applications on a regular basis.
4. Installing New Applications
Let’s install something new. I love Pac-Man, and it just so happens that the developer of Mac-Man, a great Pac-Man clone, is available on Cydia under the games category.
To install an application:
- Press Install [on the bottom]
- Browse through categories to Games
- Press Macman
- Press Install on top right
- Press Confirm to begin the download and installation
You will see it run through a series of steps . . . Downloading . . . Preparing . . . Complete.
- Press Close Window
Now Macman is successfully installed, you should be able to hit your home key, wait for your homescreen to refresh, and a tempting new Macman icon will be waiting for you.
Let’s go eat some ghosts!
5. Removing or Reinstalling Applications
Ok, so now you have an application installed, but you don’t really want to play it anymore. Removing it is as simple as a few taps:
- Open Cydia again
- Press Manage
- Scroll and find Macman
- Press Macman
- Press Modify [top right of the screen]
- Press Remove (you could reinstall if you were having issues with the application, like it wouldn’t start)
- Press Confirm to begin removing the app
- Once you see Complete, press home and the Macman icon should be gone
6. Searching for Applications
One of my favorite features of Cydia is Searching.
I can find an app without having to go through countless categories because I can’t remember where it was located:
- Press Search
- Type part of the application name or description in the search box at top
The list is filtered as you type, and all matching applications are shown. Select one to install and follow step 4 above.
Remember a lot of applications you might have seen in Installer.app previously are not yet available because the developers haven’t updated them to work on the new 2.0 software.
Check the Changes section in Cydia daily for updates. Three new applications have shown up just in the time it has taken me to write this tutorial!
A few of my favorite apps already available on Cydia:
MiM (Make it Mine) by Erica Sadun
MiM lets you customize the carrier name on the top left of the phone. You’ll notice in the screenshots above mine has my screenname “w1kedZ.”
NES
NES is a fully functional Nintendo emulator. It loads ROM files that can be found in various places on the internet. It’s great for showing off or if you really love games like Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda.
BossPrefs
BossPrefs is a great app by BigBoss that lets you easily turn on and off different features of the iPhone. Currently, the version for the 2.0 software is only really useful for turning on and off SSH if you have installed the OpenSSH package from Cydia. It also contains Poof which will allow you to hide/show icons on the homescreen; a useful feature if you are like me and don’t want the original Stocks Icon on your Springboard because you never use it.

Actually, it was written exclusively for 2.0, using Apple’s SDK. I think it’s similarity to Namco’s Pac-Man halted its acceptance to the App Store. He’s still planning to change the name and the characters so that it can make it to the App Store eventually.
@iamse7en: Thanks for the info… I noticed it in the repo, and figured it had been ported. Either way it’s a great game, I’m glad it found it’s way to the iPhone community.
I access internet through a proxy server in the wi-fi zone. It seems cydia installer is not able to access internet through proxy. It gives an error “unknown host”. When connected directly it works

If uyou want to re-install Cydia and you have the jailbreak “blackra1n” then go to home and find the blackra1n icon on your itouch. Click on the icon and if you have an internet connection there will be 3 items under the tab: Available Packages
*Cydia
*Rock
*Ice
Just press on Cydia and then click install!!
@jimbo: How did it disappear, the only way to get rid of Cydia is to restore an original firmware from itunes. If you don’t have cydia you will have to run through the jailbreak process again (using pwnage for mac, or winpwn for windows)

How long should/could the upgrade for Cydia take upon first using pwn software and running Cydia? Just curious…
Have just jailbreaked my iphone 3g. Opened Cydia and was asked to perform essential upgrade. About a 3 meg upgrade. Started the upgrade and the Running screen is showing with ”Downloading coreutils…..” with the bar below 1/3 blue. It has been like this for 30min… How long does it usually take… How do i stop it if its frozen.

Sometimes your internet connection might time out so if you just reboot your phone you should see it start to proceed with the download
It might take a couple of tries to get it to complete but most of the time when you get to 50% or more you usually good to go
its my first time to update some essential packages ..and when i started downloading…at first i thought it might work…but when i checked it back after 50 minutes it stuck ..i cant even return to the home page or turn off my ipod..but after like 20 minutes ..fortunately i can restart my ipod by forcing it(is it dangerous to do that?)..and i found out that i have 6 changes(?i didnt expected it because i thought it didn’t even working)..but i still have 4 essential packages to update…so what should i do??do i need to install the 6 changes first OR continue update the essential packages??i am afraid that it might stuck again….help me please!!!

@Zoe: The 6 updates include the essential updates as well… I recommend always doing the essential updates first. i also recommend closing and re-opening Cydia after installing ANYthing, whether it be an update or a new app. so… update essential… restart cydia… ‘upgrade all’ … restart cydia… install new app… restart cydia.. install another new app.. etc…

@zoe: it should take a couple of minutes at most.. if you are on Edge try a wifi connection, if you are on WiFi, try doing the update through Edge/3G

keatonec: Yes, you’ll be able to. Most of the new jailbreaking tools (i.e. PwnageTool, WinPwn, etc.) should have options to install neither/one/both during the pwnage process. Additionally, Installer 4.0 might be available for download through Cydia.
I am having the same problem as KeN (#26). The top section of my touch screen is frozen and I am unable to use the reload button, hence I cannot upgrade Cydia which I think would solve the frozen screen issue. I used iLiberty+ to jailbreak. Any ideas would be appreciated.

@Dalal: It wouldn’t be related to the reported blacklist. That list is still empty when browsing the URL. I’ve not experienced Cydia dissapearing from the springboard, however weirder things have happened. Have you tried restarting the phone (hold home+power for 10 seconds until the phone restarts).
@LAW: If the phone freezes you can restart it by holding down home+power for 10 seconds. Cydia is an application that runs on a computer like your phone, it has been known to crash and/or cause crashes.
@vic: Which apps are you installing that don’t have an icon. Some of the apps in cydia are services that run in the background, and some are applications that you run from the command line, not all will have icons. For instructions on putting ROMS on your phone see our SSH tutorial at How to SSH / SFTP
@luke: If cydia crashes you may need to restart, hold home+power for 10 seconds. Occasionally I’ve had cydia crash and require me to do a restore of my custom ipsw in itunes again.
I’m kicking myself bc I didn’t include installer when modded phone using winpwn 4.0 do I have to redo the winpwn process to ever get it, is there an easier way?

HELP! I installed the installer app through ssh, but now when i click on cydia to add or delete something, a box pops up everytime saying “Source error files list file for package ‘openssh’ is missing final new line”. I dont know what happened. Any advice? Thanks.
@GnubbyaBush: The easiest way to get installer on the phone would be to let itunes do a full backup and sync, and then use the winpwn process again to restore the phone with a ipsw containing installer. You will be able to restore your backup after the firmware restore process completes. Manually installing Installer requires finding the files from somewhere, and SSH’ng them onto the phone, and setting permissions. I recommend the backup/restore method.
@ED: I have no suggestions, other than follow the same instructions I gave to GnubbyaBush for restoring a jailbroken IPSW with Installer included. Sorry
Nic, thanks for replying. So, what you are saying is that I can restore to 2.0, using winpwn version 2.0.0.4? I did notice installer on the latter version of winpwn, however it was missing on the earlier one. It was also my understanding that i could not restore to 2.0.1 using winpwn v2.0.0.4. @ED: correct, 2.0.0.4 is the latest version of winpwn and supports the 2.0.1 firmware. You could also use the 2.0 firmware if you would like, but I recommend 2.0.1 since it has considerable speed fixes. Just do a full backup and sync in itunes, and then run through the winpwn process using 2.0.0.4 (make sure you download the 2.0.1 iphone software first)

@raz: It depends on which app you download. Some of the applications in cydia are command line applications that won’t have an icon.
@lakai: That would indicate either a problem w/ your connection (try 3g, edge, and wifi). I just reinstalled libsigc++ using edge and had no issues.

I just Winpwnd to 2.0 and opened up Cydia. It did not ask me to do any update just said Error: Undetermined Error and loaded the Home screen. I am using a WAP2 Enterprise Security enabled College Wifi nework witha proxy server. Any workarounds?
TIP: IF UR CYDIA ESSENTIAL UPDATE HANGS UP ON “DOWNLOADING CORE UTILS”, THEN DO THE FOLLOWING…
Simply go to SETTINGS and TURNOFF auto lock that is Settings>Autolock>NEVER. the problem was that while updating, the phone would get locked automatically after 1 minute and thus break the Wifi/Edge connection.

I have often found that when I choose to apply a springboard to via winterboard, it will only change the icons that came with iphone by dafault and will not change the rest of the icons. e.g. I applied ‘REVEAL’, and its beautiful but it only changed the first home screen (sms, date, photos, camera, you tube, stocks, etc but it did not change the icons of apps I bought from the app store.
Why is it doing that? The illustration on cydia shows all icons changed for all icons, is there something I should change on settings or something? Please advise.
@Sleekgee: I haven’t experienced this. I believe it is up to the theme author to include icons for AppStore apps as well as native OS applications. I could be incorrect. I’ll install a few themes tonight and report back
@Raman: I don’t believe cydia will work behind a proxy server, however are you using an iPod or an iPhone? If you are using an iPhone just disconnect from wifi and use the 3g/Edge network instead

@Gus: I know there is no way to do it currently with the native iPhone sms application, but there is a jailbreak app called BiteSMS available in both Cydia and Installer. It may have the functionality you’re requesting. Try it out and let us know! If it’s useful I’ll do a review/walkthrough for it.

whenever I load winterboard I loose the use of my phonecalls, everything else works o.k but no keypad buttons work, the green call button is blank does not say call cannot press any numerical buttons either therefore cannot make any phonecalls but if I uninstall winterboard everything is back to normal what can b causing this please help me as I want my red bubbles and gunshot slider!!!!????
@Costa: I’m sorry I’m not of much help on this one… I’ve never seen the symptoms you describe. My only suggestion is to try a Restore to your pwned firmware again, and try reinstalling winterboard.
I cannot uninstall iLocator off my Iphone. When I go to the page and press unintsall it thinks its uninstalled because it says install again but the iLocator icon is still on my Iphone. Any Idears

Just got myself the officially unlocked iPhone 3G from Hongkong about a week ago. Just last night i tried using Pwnage to install Installer and Cydia. Was a bit skeptical as Pwnage jailbreaks iphone while mine is already unlocked from the factory. Nevertheless i went on and all works well with NO PROBLEM at all! Having downloaded winterboard to my springboard, I then downloaded a theme app called iGlassSol.
This then went into my winterboard icon. I was able to tick the IGlassSol inside the winterboard, but it seems to have no affect on my iphone3G.

i need a little help here…. i updated my 3G iphone 2.1 to 2.2, then jailbreak it, intalled with yellowsn0w 9.6, it works ok, now running without turbo sim.

@Jeannie nothing that you do in Cydia will affect the jailbroken status of your phone. If you’re seeing Cydia, you know you’re good. Update it any time that it asks. Also, they recently released an update to your phone’s “carrier settings” or something like that…it’s ok to install that update…it wont affect your jailbreak. Otherwise, when a new firmware comes out, wait about a week or so until the dev team releases the patch for it before upgrading.

When I uninstall some useless applications, my iphone says “it now works in safe mode”.There is a bar at the top saying “Exit Safe Mode”.When i press it says ” Reboot (or restart Springboard)to return to the normal mode.I did both but no result.Does anybody knows something?My phone works properly but it has no graphic environment (I cant put any winterboard themes or walpapers).

u did an untethered jailbreak and dont know how to turn ir back on. do a full restore on itunes then google untethered jailbreak on mac or windows depending on what u have on the firmware and generation of ipod you have.

your device is most likely tethered…which is basically a regular jailbreak, only whenever you need to reboot you will need to connect to the computer again…..theres a simple download on the web called 1clickreboot that you can download and just click the reboot .exe file and follow the 2 steps and it’ll start back up….i’ll post a link to download it very very soon, as soon as i’m off work…

Hi I have Cydia and I had the Winterboard, Dtunes, and other applications on my iPhone but my sister was messing around with my phone and accidently deleted those applications. I tried going back to Cydia and reinsalling them again and it gave me the ”INSTALL’ option so I clicked it and just like regural applications it will take me to the main menu but usually when it does that you can see the application being loaded but it doesn’t do that to my phone. And when I clicked back to Cydia and went right back to the application that I just installed it says ‘MODIFY’ so obviously the application is installed to my phone but I just don’t see the icon for it. Can you guys please help me out and let me know how can I fix this or what should I do to get those applications back and up and running? Thank you in advance! (PS. its cause you must have wireless on the regullar internets to slow if its not that then try installing a jail brake again remove and re-install thats what i did

Try logging into your iTunes account on your PC/Mac and the sync ur iPhone. Or try using iTunes on you iPhone and if it asks for user and pass, try changing both to yours.

Cydia is the “Other” App store. It’s where you get free 3rd party apps.
Installer is another one, but it has the same things (but less of them) that Cydia does. I suggest installing “Hood” with Installer if your Pwn tool came with the option to do so.

There is an expression RTFM – please do so. There is a ton of information on the web regarding this entire process. There are even sites that give you all you ever need to get the software, there are PDF’s. You must be living in the 20th C if you can’t find information on technology on the web.
Those of you that keep asking these asinine questions are expecting others to do your work for you. Perhaps what you should be typing in Google is “who will jailbreak my iphone” and then expect to pay a fee.
Go on line…I assume you already know how to use a browser…go to Google…do we really need to help you get there? and in the search window type something apropos to get a good search…”jailbreak iphone” comes to mind.
Please take the time to RTFM!
And no…this isn’t my site. I don’t have on dedicated to jailbreaking, I just know how to use technology…and I’m well into my 50’s…so kiddies…if you have trouble with technology maybe you shouldn’t bother buying it…
BTW – Google reports 3.21 MILLION results just from the search “jailbreak iphone”. My guess is you’ll find the information you need at one of those locations.

I did an upgrade, and then when I returned to the home screen, a pop up notified that the springboard had crashed. I tried to restart the springboard, and it did not work. I then restarted the entire phone, and that did not work. Help?

Either your WiFi connection is somewhat weak, or your 3G is at 1 bar strength. (assuming you have it).. E isn’t usually good enough with less than 3 bars if you’re trying to install a somewhat large file (500kB plus). It’s also got to do with the server of the site you’re trying to access.. For example.. the iSpazio repisitory website might be experiencing a lot of traffic. You can just go back in like half an hour or so.

I just bought a new 3g Iphone and realised its boring, So I jailbroke it very easily using quickpwn. Now I have access to so much on my iphone including being able to now transfer via bluetooth an excellent 1st stage sat nav system and tons and tons more stuff. Guys its very easy to Jailbreak your phone and there are so many sites with info on how to do it, and it only takes a couple of mins to do. You then need to play with your machine for a while to understand how to get repostitories where all the good stuff is. Good Luck. Mikey

Please help. I downloaded the “Folders” app from Cydia. It was a great way to organize apps. But I didn’t read the “read this before upgrading to 2.2″ message before upgrading to 2.2, so now all the applications that were in those folders are gone. They’re still in my iTunes, but won’t load onto my phone at all. Is there any way around this? Thanks for your help.

I installed xyflash. Since I cannot properly view movies in my media player from safari like I once did like on porn hub mobile. etc. I get a black screen and I do not know how to get back to my default player. I uninstalled xyflash and still same deal. I recently contacted the author of the program but have not yet received a resonse. Anyone got other suggestions?

Ok, you go on Google and type “dev iphone blog” then look for the blog.iphone-dev link. then scroll down on that page to the downloads and download QuickPWN with the version you’ve got (ex. iphone 3g 2.2). Once you’ve downloaded QuickPWN open it and run it. It might say you have to extract files or something just click OK. Then all you have to do is follow the instructions from QuickPWN and…voila!

Try to reinstal OS3 firmware and jailbreak. I had the same problem. Now it’s Ok>
You DO NOT have to reinstall the firmware all you have to do is re-jailbreak, but DO NOT select ICY for install.

Hello just Jailbroke my iPhone 2G 3.0 OS. Got Cydia running when I try install anything I get the following error:

In Cydia i have the program NES stuck it will not install or let me cancel it. every time i install something eles it trys to install how do i get it out of queue i canceled that does not stop it its stuck!

CYDIA does not Load or launch (iPhone 3G OS3)-
I used redsn0w8 to jailbreak my iPhone 3G OS3. Intalled Cydia in the process (skipped ICY). In the beginning, Cydia was working well. I was able to download and update some applications. After a few hours,however, Cydia refuses to launch. I get a blank screen when I press the Cydia icon but Cydia does not Load. The window just shuts down and returns to the iPhone screen. I re-installed Cydia but this does not help. How do I solve the problem?

I had jailbroken my ATT 3G iPhone a month ago and after a couple of weeks I started having problems. First, I can not talk over skype. I can make calls but they are always garbled. Before jailbreak and for 2 weeks after, it worked fine. any apps or programs to help with this?

i am exactly in your shoes, i dont know what to do. i wanted to install the icall log delete (because the iodiots who made iphone never thought one would want to edit his/her call log!! Blah!). i used the blackra1n and it did reboot the device, i installed cydia and got the program. once program is setup, it restarts and asks to be connected to itunes, then it restores/deletes all! what the hell is wrong? did you solve your problem?

i just got a new unlocked iphone…i am using the tmobile network with unlimited texting. i also have the 3g network. everything on my phone is working fine i just cannot send or receive regular texts or multimedia texts. I dont understand why. i downloaded blackrain and cydia and i dont have the mms option under messages ( to be able to add an mms address) i am frustrated because i like to text alot. can someone please help me? i dont want to restore my phone because i did it twice already and it took me hours and i got nowhere. anything that will work will be appreciated……

I jailbreak my Iphone 3Gs and it went fine. When I turned on the phone again after doing so my WiFi stopped working. Before than that It was working fine and connecting to my home network, but since then it is not picking any Wifi Connection. If some body know what is the problem please help me out of it.

Try going into General -> Settings -> Reset Network settings. Your Wifi should work again.
BTW, which baseband and FW is your iphone having? Any other problems you encountered after jailbreaking e.g. some applications not working well or stopped working totally?
hi, i downloaded pacman and when it finished it said close window. it worked fine. but when i downloaded a theme it said reboot system so i pressed it and it got bricked-unrecognizable to itunes- this has happened before!!!

just downloaded Cydia, i tried to dowload bluebird (the theme that maeks the apps blue) and it rebooted. Now when I turn it on it says I have to connect to iTunes. then iTunes says i haver to restore it.

Nope! After you jailbreak a 3G, you have to keep rejailbreaking it because its tethered.

I was under the impression that jailbreaking gave free access to any app, not just cloned or knock-off apps. Am i missing something or just misinformed?

how do you remove cydia from ipod??
You have to plug it in to itunes. Sync your IPod/IPhone then go into the IPod/IPhone tab in itunes and click restore. It’ll restore you IPod/IPhone so don’t freak out cuz it does some weird stuff.
