Reports and photos are already emerging from the MacRumors Forums citing hairline cracks in the iPhone 3G casing. The fractures appear to be predominantly appearing on the more expensive white 16GB version.

Why is Apple’s shiny new wonder-gadget now sporting a plastic housing as opposed to the rigid metal that safeguarded 1st gen iPhones?

While Apple might have you believe it’s to make the device lighter, sleeker, and ‘cooler’, the real reason might be that it costs them over $50 less to produce than its 2G predecessor. Such sacrifices to employ cheaper parts are already affecting 3G owners less than 3 weeks after the handset’s initial launch.

Apple products are not uninitiated to such problems, as AppleDefects.com shows pictures and stories of MacBook laptops that experienced similar cracks.

  1. This happened to my macbook last year. =(

  2. I have a white iPhone and no cracks.

I also take care of this beauty! I don’t carry it in my back pocket (which could be one reason for the cracks) …

  3. Not limited to the white ones only. But they may show easier on the white plastic. I have multiple cracks on my black one appear during first 6 months of use. Yet my old 2G iPhone (year older) that my wife now uses has yet show any signs of stress. Yes the alu-case is VERY worn, but naturally it will not crack like the cheap plastic one on the 3Gs…

Guess I’ll just have to buy a chinese knock-off case for my iPhone. Definately it cannot be any lower quality, as it comes from the same factory. Only with this Apple gets no share of the $20 price.
