Many of you have been anxious to know whether the upcoming 2.1 firmware would still be jailbreakable. Well, worry no more. After closely examining the 2.1 firmware (seeded to developers earlier this week), the iPhone Dev Team posted today that Pwnage will continue to work on the upcoming firmware and will not break the hack.

Unlike all other jailbreaks (and unlocks for 1G), we believe Pwnage to be fixable only via a hardware revision. So far Pwnage has worked for 1.1.4, all eight (!) 2.0 betas, 2.0 itself, and now 2.1 beta1.

Below is a screenshot of a “pwned” first gen iPhone on 2.1 firmware.

  1. love the site..thanks for constant updates

my question is..i know pwnage allows us to jailbreak the phone and all..but whats the point of doing this right away when theres no 3rd party software available anymore? on top of that, lets not forget future apple firmware updates may block the phone from functioning properly..am i missing something here?

  2. oops i meant “anywhere”

  3. @CL: Sure, there aren’t many apps for jailbroken iPhones on 2.0 yet, but even right now there are already some cool ones (BossPrefs, NES emulator, OpenSSH etc.). With the launch of the App Store people might be wondering if others are coming, but they most definitely are. Check out Nic’s great post on “How to Use Cydia: A Walkthrough.”

Also, as per the quote from the Dev Team above, they are confident that the exploit they found cannot be patched via software (i.e. firmware upgrades), but hardware only.
