I believe a cell phone - like boxer briefs, loofahs, and Jolly Ranchers - is a one owner type of item. You never know what the previous owner was like, how they treated your hand-me-down, or why they gave it up in the first place.

From what I have heard, Apple has a positive track record with refurbished goods. Those commenting at
MacWorld have attested to Apple's history of good second-hand electronics. I don't know if the fifty buck discount is worth wondering how many times your new iPhone has been dropped, or what the previous owner's cheek looked like.
