Last week iJustine broke the story on how to get smiley faces and other “emoji” characters on the iPhone without jailbreaking it. This was all made possible by a $.99 app named FrostyPlace.
Well for the next 24 hours FrostyPlace will be free in the App Store. As long as you haven’t updated to the latest firmware 2.2.1, all you have to do is download this free app, play with it for a minute or so, and then turn on the emoji characters in your setting app.
After you enable the emoji’s you can upgrade to the latest firmware without losing the cool character set. The developer is aware of the problem the latest firmware causes, and says he is working on fix in the next update.
It is hard for me to believe that Apple would approve an update that opens up an unwanted setting, especially if the developer is bragging about it. So if you already updated to 2.2.1, you may have to get emojis the old fashion way: jailbreak.
UPDATE
FrostyPlace sale is over and the app is now $.99

OMG, no freaking way! I haven’t wanted emoticons on my iPhone for so long. Thank you FrostyPlace
It’s worth $.99, it’s worth a lot more than $.99! Thanks
They should rename the application to “Emoji Enabler.” They will make a lot more money that way.
Im using 2.2.1 and the Emojis are working for me just fine using Frostysplace to set it up
I’ve upgraded to 2.2.1 earlier and now Frostyplace won’t start… ;( DAMN… If only I knew this app ONE day earlier… ;( Is there a possibility to go back to an earlier Firmware… There isn’t I guess… ;(
When I use this keyboard the smileys look great on my end, but they just look like a box to everyone I send them to. Am I missing something?
@Kirbyator – Emoji icons can only be displayed on emoji enabled devices. Basically Japanese phones, the iPhone and iPod touch.
