AT&T's MicroCell Will Help Your iPhone's Reception

February 8, 2009
If you have particularly poor reception in your home or business their may be help on the way. AT&T is working on a Femtocell device that should alleviate at least some of the pain that's inflicted by dropped calls and slow data transfer speeds. The AT&T MicroCell acts like a small cellular tower. All you need is an existing broadband internet service to connect the device to and be located in an authorized AT&T service area. Upon initial set-up, the device needs a GPS link to verify the location so you may need to place it near a window but that's a small price to pay for a strong wireless signal. The AT&T MicroCell is then able to cover up to 5,000 square feet of space while allowing up to four devices to be used simultaneously. If you are worried about someone else using your network there is no need, it cannot be accessed by unauthorized users because it includes a simple online management system. The device also supports seamless call hand-over, allowing you to leave the building without your call getting interrupted. The AT&T MicroCell will only be compatible with 3G handsets, specifically noting the iPhone 3G, while allowing voice and data to be used over the network. No release date or pricing information exists at this point. AT&T had the device listed on their website for a short period of time but it has since been removed. Just recently, however, AT&T issued a carrier settings update through iTunes that added PNG images for the AT&T MicroCell to the iPhone which could mean the device's launch is near. Other companies offer similar devices with varying costs. Some companies choose to charge a single upfront cost while others have a smaller upfront cost with monthly fees. Hopefully AT&T's pricing is competitive because there are many iPhone users out there begging for technology of this kind. [via Boy Genius Report]
