According to DigiTimes’ “market sources,” Apple has tapped OmniVision to supply them with 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensors for the often rumored next-generation iPhone.
OmniVision was supposedly able to beat out the likes of STMicroelectronics and Aptina Imaging to supply the units for Apple. The same report also states that OmniVision will also be supplying 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors for another Apple product expected to launch this year.
This report seems feasible enough because the next-generation iPhone has been constantly rumored to contain video recording capabilities.
As for what the 5-megapixel cameras would be used for, your guess is as good as mine.

with phones having 8mp, 3.2mp is still pretty bad why wont they go higher then anyone else?
I would like to see a camera flash as well.
Apple is fanatic about battery life. I wouldn’t count on it.
They wouldn’t have to be if they let charging packs work with the iPhone
i RARELY use my phones camera. It’s shit, but then again i really don’t plan on doing any substantial photography with it. I got my 3g in November. I plan on using it for a few years. With the phones great open ended FW i don’t have to worry about apple dropping support for older models. We will still get all the features implemented and revised, just not new physical perks
