One billion app countdown

billionapps 150x150 Week In Review April 24th Edition

Apple’s application counter moved at a rapid pace, eventually hitting the one billion downloads mark on  April 23rd.  That means it only took nine months for this grand achievement to occur.  The billionth application downloaded was Bump by Bump Technologies, and the person who downloaded it was a 13-year-old boy named Connor Mulcahey.  He will be receiving his grand prize of a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro.  We are all very, very jealous.

Q2 ends with a bang

Apple posted their second quarter financial results, which revealed that they had their best March quarter revenue and earnings in their entire history.  The iPhone also posted some big numbers with Apple selling 3.79 million units.  That same day AT&T revealed their iPhone activation numbers of 1.6 million units.  AT&T’s wireless and data revenues were also up for the quarter thanks to Apple’s iPhone.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta findings

As always, developers and curious people alike were able to find a few more interesting features inside of the iPhone OS 3.0 beta.  One finding indicates that the new OS will feature added MobileMe support such as data merging, and will also feature the ability to publish files to your MobileMe account directly from your iPhone.  New podcast and music features were also discovered that include the ability to change audio scrubbing speeds, change playback speeds for podcasts, single-tap jump back for podcasts, and additional data displayed for podcasts.

Next-gen rumors

One website reported that Apple was slashing prices on iPhone AV cables to make room for a brand new all-in-one cable simply titled Apple AV Cable.  They eventually conclude that because of this, the next-gen iPhone will contain a HD display.  Bluetooth SIG formally adopted Bluetooth 3.0 and like all new technologies that are announced, it is assumed Apple will use it in their next iPhone.  One rumor site reported that the company that is supplying Apple with power management chips for the next-gen iPhone has already begun shipping them.  Finally, indications of a new voice control feature were found and it is codenamed “Jibbler.”  That’s it, that’s all we know.

Odd apps at the App Store

Apple made a huge mistake by allowing the now infamous Baby Shaker app to be placed at the App Store.  They swiftly removed the application but not before every major media outlet got word of it.  Apple later apologized.  Another odd application was placed at the App Store, but this one isn’t as nearly as offensive, it is actually fairly humorous.  The application Poop the World allows you to keep track of your poop, send an iPoop to your friends, or even track your poop locations via the iPhone’s GPS.  See, poop is funny, baby shaking is not.

New and noteworthy apps

We were able to get a hands-on preview of Chillingo’s upcoming title Toki Tori, and let’s just say it looks fantastic.  A new application titled PocketMeter hit the App Store, which allows you to calculate various distances by emitting sounds and measuring the amount of time it takes for the sound to return.  Mactracker was released for the iPhone, which is an application that contains nearly every Apple product ever made along with various tech specs.  A new iPhone application titled iNap@Work was released that allows you to do what the title indicates by playing all different kinds of office sounds.
