alreadypurchased New Message Discovered When Re Downloading Promo Code Apps

We have a bit of disheartening news for those of you that re-download applications via your iPhone after redeeming a promo code through the iTunes Store.  Apparently, you no longer can, or at least free of charge.

Before you get too excited, let me clear this up for you.  Just Another iPhone Blog discovered this new road block within iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5, not in the current iPhone OS.  According to the blog, they haven’t seen this message before when attempting to re-download a promo code application, so it seems to be a new issue.

Normally, as it is in iPhone OS 2.x, you are able to redeem promo codes via the “Redeem” link in the iTunes Store, and instead of having to resync your device with your computer to obtain the application, you can download the application through your iPhone.  A message appears stating that you have already downloaded the application, and you can re-download it again for free.  Well, that’s how it used to work.

In iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5, when you try to do the same thing, apparently a new message appears stating that you can re-download the application for free, but you must do so on your computer.  If you choose to re-download the application directly from your iPhone, you will be charged for it.

Having to resync your device every time you redeem a promo code is going upset a few people, especially people like me who redeem promo codes every day.  The bigger concern here is if the same thing would apply for every application downloaded, not just promo code applications.  Imagine having to resync your device every single time you want to re-download an application that you have already paid for.  What if you don’t have access to your computer at that time?  What are you supposed to do, purchase it again?

Have any of you witnessed this message when using iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5?

Update: We are able to confirm that this restriction doesn’t just apply to promo code applications, it applies to all applications.  This means that you will not be allowed to re-download any of the applications you already own via your iPhone or iPod touch.

  1. Grrrrrr. What a rip off. Can anyone verify that you still get the old message when re-downloading an app you paid for?

  2. In 2.2.1 it still works fine. I hope this is not really the case in 3.0 and just a beta bug, but it looks bad.

  3. I don’t exhibit this behavior on 3.0 beta 5, I’ve downloaded many apps (promo code, and otherwise) from the phone w/ no issue.

  4. this was not the issue when i used to have the 3.0 beta 5 on my ipod

i think they may have gotten it wrong lol :D

  5. arrrr

    bit then look

the old message is from an ipod touch

the new message is from an iphone that could be why i havn’t seen the message

maybe its only for the iphone

    :S

  6. Guess I must correct myself, Originally on b5 I didn’t have this message, last night I installed b5 again to test and sure enough this is now what I get.

It appears this can be turned on and off at apple. This is a HUGE inconvenience, I like to keep my iPhone clean so I don’t leave a lot of apps installed, I generally download as needed, and that’s not usually near my computer at home.

I really hope this doesn’t end up in the release version, it would make the phone an unorganized mess for users. They would have to keep rarely used apps on the phone at all times “just in case”

  7. This really sucks. I am thinking of all the apps I download just when I travel, like flight status…I don’t want these to stay on my phone at all times

  8. I agree with Jessica. There are often times that I have removed an app because it is a space waster (not just MB but visually) and then I am out somewhere and realize I need it and go straight to it in the iTunes store. There has to be some other way that Apple can do what they want to accomplish here without removing this feature that is used by so many. Of course, it would help if they provided notice that this was going to happen and maybe explained why they were looking at this. Particularly since people who have 3.0 are acting as their beta testers.
