Newtoy is a relatively new independent video game development company.  It was founded in 2008 by two brothers, Paul and David Bettner, who previously worked on such best-selling titles as Age of Empires and the more recent Halo Wars for the Xbox 360.  They currently only have one title available at the App Store, a simple chess game called  Chess With Friends, and even though it has garnered some pretty positive reviews, they have decided to try something a bit more difficult this time around.  Newtoy is partnering with Ashley Wood, the renowned creator of the graphic novels Popbot and Zombies vs. Robots, to bring his World War Robot universe to life in a new game for the iPhone and iPod touch.
"We share a dream for a new kind of game development," said Paul Bettner, creative director at Newtoy. "World class game makers from around the globe - artists and illustrators, designers, musicians, coders - joining forces to craft the highest quality entertainment experiences on the most cutting edge game platforms. We are moving away from the monolithic studio model of development. We want to redefine the way video games are made. This collaboration with Ashley is that dream, realized."
Of the partnership, Wood says, "I'm excited to team up with game creators who I have admired and, more importantly, whose games I have enjoyed playing over the years!"
The content of the graphic novel sounds pretty intriguing, so here is quick description of the book:
In World War Robot, a dwindling band of humans and robots face off in a battle that will likely end humanity as we know it - on Earth, on the Moon, and on Mars, too! Badass battles, really intense human/robot drama, and even a little black humor and political intrigue are the order of the day in this oversize, standalone epic courtesy of Wood.
Little else is known about the game.  If the World War Robot game contains even some of the original art by Ashley Wood, which we can only assume it does, the game should at the very least be pretty amazing to look at.  What the gameplay consists of, or how it controls remains to be seen.  This is definitely a title to keep your eye on as time goes by.  As always we will do our best to keep you updated. worldwarrobot3worldwarrobot2
