slingplayer SlingPlayer Mobile For iPhone Finally On Its Way, WiFi Only

The long wait for SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone seems to be nearly over.  The Internet has been abuzz all morning with news that Sling Media is finally ready to take the wraps off of its highly anticipated application, but it seems to have gone through a couple changes thanks to AT&T and Apple.

SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone will not only support current Slingboxes, which includes the Pro-HD and Solo models, but it will also work with legacy Slingboxes like the Classic, AV, and Tuner models.  The only difference is that the legacy models won’t be officially supported, as in if you have trouble with the device, don’t go calling Sling Media.

Adding unofficial support for the legacy devices may be their way of saying sorry for not including any 3G or EDGE support, which has now been stripped from the application, so SlingPlayer Mobile will only feature WiFi connectivity.

SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone is said to be priced at $29.99, and it should be hitting the App Store sometime after midnight.

Stay tuned to our site for a full in-depth review of SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone, which will be available at exactly 9:01 P.M. PST.

  1. WiFi only? Talk about a good reason for jailbreaking… If you have a Blackberry, you can get SlingPlayer over 3G… why would Apple allow it’s app to be WiFi only? I really hate to think that Apple didn’t fight with AT&T over this. And I’m sure Sling isn’t happy about it either… or at least they shouldn’t be…

I’ll stay optimistic though until the app is officially available… but if it is WiFi only, there’s going to be plenty of iPhone users who aren’t going to fork over $30 for this app.

  2. I’ll be there…………………….

  3. I’d guess 3G / 4G support will come. Right now, I’m sure there’s a lot of ruffles with finding a great balance of AT&T network data use. Perhaps Apple is willing to try giving AT&T some months to play catch up on the amount of stress iPhones have placed on their network. I’d guess AT&T is sufficient with the amount of funds but time is also ( always ) an issue with upgrades / transitions.

Be patient and be happy you have what you have. On top of that. Wi-Fi should give the best performance anyway.
