And then there was light

iphone_illuminate

Our next-gen iPhone specs list indicated that the new device would contain an illuminated Apple logo and a different front bezel, and while we were skeptical ourselves, one website went out of their way to bash the idea altogether.  The funny thing is, that same website ended up getting a tip that indicated the next-gen iPhone would indeed contain an illuminated Apple logo along with a different front bezel.  Now just to be clear, these are still just rumors, but it looks like someone may be eating their words soon enough.

Same case, different story

Rumors usually create confusion, but not this time.  One website found icons within iPhone OS 3.0 that may indicate the next-gen iPhone will have the same form factor as the current iPhone.  Another website indicated more of the same, but stated that the back of the device would have a matte finish.  To add to the already long list, a Chinese parts supplier listed next-gen iPhone components on their website that indicated the new iPhone would indeed follow the same form factor, just with a different bezel.

AT&T speeds it up

celltower

We were already aware that AT&T intended to speed up their network, but they finally decided to make it official.  This week AT&T formally announced their plans to upgrade their network to HSPA 7.2 technology starting this year, and that the upgrade should be complete sometime in 2011.  AT&T also was rumored to have a bit of an issue with the current generation iPhone, allegedly running out of the devices.  The rumor was then squashed by an AT&T spokesperson who denied everything.  Still, who do they think they are kidding?  We know the next-gen iPhone is coming sooner or later.

Previews, previews, and more previews

Tons of previews this week, but we can’t list them all, so here are just a few.  Google Latitude was shown off at this week’s Google I/O event, but it isn’t an application, it’s a web app.  Sirius XM gave us a glimpse of their new application for the iPhone, but that’s it.  John Carmack decided to show us some screenshots of Doom Classic, and it looks amazing.  EA Mobile unveiled more new content, including screenshots for Mass Effect Galaxy and a gameplay video for The Sims 3.

New and noteworthy apps

A game we have all been dreaming about, BeatRider Touch, finally arrived, which allows you to play your own music.  Chillingo released Return to Mysterious Island.  iBomber hit the App Store, and the developer released a gameplay video with someones name in it.  The odd dudes at Smort released a frog themed virtual musical instrument.  FDG Entertainment released their new casual game that has you falling from the sky.  Finally, an old classic got remade for the iPhone, but in two distinctly different forms.
