There are probably tons of you out there who own an iPhone 3G and are already prepared to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S, but you may not be eligible for a standard iPhone upgrade. So what can you do? Don’t worry, we have the details for you.
All valued AT&T customers will be able to get the new iPhone 3G S or the iPhone 3G, it’s just that some of you may have to pay a premium price. If you aren’t eligible for the standard iPhone upgrade through AT&T, you can always go with the early upgrade offer.
The early upgrade offer allows you to purchase a new 16GB iPhone 3G S with a new 2-year contract and an $18 upgrade fee for $399 or the 32GB iPhone 3G S for $499. If you just want to upgrade to the 8GB iPhone 3G, the price is only $299 with a 2-year contract and $18 upgrade fee.
Normally, standard iPhone upgrades or users who are new to AT&T can get the 8GB iPhone 3G for $99, 16GB iPhone 3G S for $199, and the 32GB iPhone 3G S for $299.
Apple and AT&T want to get the iPhone in as many hands as possible, so don’t worry, there is always a way.

Doesn’t really sound like much of a way. $200 premium for people who have iPhone 3G’s? It sounds like they are saying, we already got you by the balls and if you give me $200 I’ll let go. NO DEAL!
If I currently own a 3G but am eligible for a standard upgrade soon, do I still have to sign a 2-yr contract to receive the $299 price for the 32GB iPhone 3G s?
Or, Cancel AT&T, and pay the ETF. The ETF is cheaper than the upgrade.

Zubair A: I do understand your concern and regret for the inconvenience caused to you, however there are no discounts on the iPhones.
Jeff Logan: At least some AT&T customers can now upgrade to an iPhone before the expiry of their normal contracts, representatives are said to confirm. Though not advertised, a deal has been introduced under which non-iPhone subscribers can upgrade to an iPhone 3G roughly 14 months into a standard two-year contract, at subsidized prices rather than any penalized ones.
