With the launch of a new OS and a new iPhone within a couple of days of each other, there are bound to be a few bumps along the road. We have seen some odd things already surface, like the removal of the “More” tab from the App Store and the battery
percentage meter conundrum, and now we have some new ones to add to the list.
Several readers have reported, and we have been able to confirm this ourselves, that Apple’s Stocks and Weather apps have decided to quit working. It’s not as if the apps won’t launch, it’s that they won’t load any data.
Go ahead, try it if you haven’t already. Both of the apps are unable to retrieve any data, so all you are left with is an updating or retrieving message. We don’t have a solution to the problem, we just wanted to let you know that it isn’t just you having the problem.
Feel free to leave a comment below if either the Stocks or Weather apps begin working again for you.

I can confirm both apps are not working for me.
This is very odd. Right when I finished installing 3.0, I tested all of my apps to see if there where any hidden features and both of these apps worked fine. I am using a 1st Generation iPod Touch 16 GB.
Same issue with mine.
Yup, problems for me too. Yahoo is the engine for the stocks. Weather channel is engine for weather app (right?). Too much network traffic? Not updated for 3.0??
Unless they’ve changed it, weather is brought by http://www.accuweather.com
Looking again, it is Yahoo! Weather. Look at the bottom corner. So… Yahoo! Is dropping the ball again. :8-)
Not working for me either in Kenilworth UK. Oh dear Apple can not cope again?
Same for me. Same is also true for Yahoo’s Dashbaord Stocks app. It just reads the total from yesterday.
Yep,
Both doesn’t work and I just run another clean restore and yet no change
I wish stocks and weather would just disappear completely since I use other apps and I don’t need those natives taking up space. Do I have to wait for OS 4.0 to delete native apps?
There actually is a way to hide those apps. With 3.0 there is no limit to the amount of apps you have on your device, except for storage space. The apps that don’t fit on the 11 home screens will be hidden, but still can be accessed via spotlight. You can use this to hide the apple-default applications.
Hi Reed thanks. That’s a good thought but wouldn’t I still need to get stocks and weather off my device first? I’m thinking the initial 11 pages have to be full before going to the hidden overflow? Or maybe I can just move apps onto the hidden section? Whatever, I have 2 new pages to fill so I’m good for now but I’m sure it won’t be long before I’ll have to see how this all really works.
You would need to fill the 11 pages and have stocks and weather at the end.
What is your preferred Finance application? Bloomberg, AOL Daily Finance?
I used to use Boomberg but now primarily iStockManager by TD Ameritrade since I have an account with them and can check my positions/balance and trade. But my brokerage of choice is Zecco.com because of their lower rates and free trades policy. Wish they would come out with an app. I have asked but nothing yet.
I had never seen Yahoo appearing with the Stocks program before the 3.0 update. Now it is there all the time at the bottom of the screen. The slowdown and malfunction of the Stocks program started when that happened. Did Apple sell the program to Yahoo as an advertisement?
There must be some mind-reading going on because as soon as I posted the comment above, the Stocks program started working again…..hmmm
Stocks.app on the iPhone has had data provided by Yahoo since 1.0, and has also had the Y! logo in the lower left and on the backside of the widget.
Yep it’s the same for me.
it works now
A lot of apps have been given bad reviews because they are yet to be compatible with OS 3.0. This is frustrating !!
My weather details for Adelaide Australia are not accurate.they are always different than the weather channel on foxtel
Yahoo weather on my iPhone stopped updating a few weeks ago. It always shows the correct date and time at the bottom but the temperatures are wrong. I don’t know how to make it start working again.
