The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute of Memphis, Tennessee has issued a brief press release with the permission of Steve Jobs himself, confirming that he did in fact receive a liver transplant. The press release comes only days after the Wall Street Journal initially reported that Steve Jobs received a liver transplant about two months ago. The release also addresses the speculation that Jobs was given special treatment due to his wealth and fame, stating that he qualified for the transplant because he was the "patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available." The release goes on to say that "Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis." The release did not state when the procedure took place. We reported yesterday that Jobs was seen back at work, and if the two month report is true, that is a pretty rapid recovery but we are glad to hear it. Some have suggested that Jobs' return will only be part-time, at least for the next couple of months until he has fully recovered.
