Just moments ago Apple made iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2 available for download to developers in the iPhone Dev Center. This release includes downloads for the iPhone and iPod touch as well as an updated SDK. There’s no immediate word on what enhancements or changes this update includes but it’s good news to see that Apple has chosen to made their beta firmware available widely available to developers as opposed to how they did it during the life cycle of OS 2.0 where it was available to only a select few.

If you’re a developer, head on over to the iPhone Dev Center and get your hands on a copy of the Beta 2. After installing it, let us know in the comments if you notice anything different, good or bad.

  1. I really hope the new update cones sooner than later. My phone has been sluggish since 3.0.

  2. Well, I can safely say that the FW3.1b2 officially breaks the custom .ipcc carrier file that activates tethering. If you’re one of those that have been using this, don’t upgrade to FW3.1 when it comes out.

I’m fairly certain that the only major differences in FW3.1 are going to be MMS activation, Tethering activation (maybe, big “maybe” here…), manual carrier installation breaking, and bugfixes. As long as we’re talking about bugs, I have one for FW3.0 that’s driving me nuts. When you rent a movie in iTunes on the phone, it can interrupt the download and go into an endless cycle of “Download error. Tap to retry.” No matter how many times you tap, restart, hard reset, re-purchase, it will continue to happen. Has anyone else experienced this?

  3. There is also a triple click home option, but it is for accessibility not for anything cool. Pic: http://twitpic.com/ado5g
