Apple today announced that over 1.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store during its first year of operation. That would mean about 4 million apps are downloaded every single day!
“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”
Apple also mentioned that the App Store now has more than 65,000 apps and more than 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.
With over 40 million devices capable of running apps from the App Store, the rate of apps being downloaded will only increase. The App Store has become one giant beast with no signs of slowing down.

That’s incredible.
I don’t think Blakberry’s App World, Palm’s App Catolog, or the google app store will ever be able to catch up to how well the Apple App Store is doing.
Textropolis seems like an awesome word game that looks super cool
But can the AppStore pass McDonald’s?
What Mc Donald’s???
I’m doing my part, it’s like I’m a meth addict!
Cool milestone for Apple, and textropolis looks like a really stylish word game from one of my favorite devs, Ian Marsh.
Wow. Oh, and Textropolis
Textropolis looks great
I love games like Word Scramble, but the time limit is so annoying, sometimes it’d be nice to have a more relaxed game.
65,000? Wow! I remember when it was just at 50,000, it doesn’t seem that long ago. Same with a billion downloads. Wasn’t THAT long ago.
Textropolis looks like a fun game and I already have Scoops and Sky Burger and Kyper, so Textropolis would be a nice addition to the family.
My question is if the other app stores COMBINED will ever be able to reach the iPhone number.
I feel like the development of the iPhone an subsequently the entrance of the app store has been the smartest business move for apple in the past 3 years. It is the one product that has the staying power of any other cell phone out there and incorporates the best portable music player with integration to a great music managing software. In terms of the numbers being released that reflect the success of these business plans I have to wonder when will there be a moment where apple makes a misstep.
I am responsible for for about 300 downloads. I think I keep about 20 on my phone at all times
Holy cow! It felt like only recently that Apple announced that they had sold their one billionth app!
Apple’s foray into the entire iTunes Store / App Store has turned out even better than they could probably imagined. Despite some bumps, curves, and dead ends here and there, it has gone quite smoothly considered the massive undertaking. Of course, we can’t forget about those artists, producers, and other creative minds providing the content. Congratulations to all!!!!
It was 1 billion downloads in 9 months! App Store is a year old now…
That means 0.5 BILLION downloads in only 3 months!! wow! just wow…!
Clearly Apple store is ruling the roost in application arena… There is no one even near to it to compete.Nokia, RIM, Palm and Android all wanted to replicate App Store. Verizon is also toying with the idea by announcing its own APP store… But getting large number of developers and building the software is not bread and butter.. Catch App Store if you can!!
To be honest, I dont see the other app stores catching up with apple even in the next few years, Congrats to Apple!
Wow, that’s alot of apps a day.
