AT&T’s “Seth The Blogger Guy” Explains MMS And Network Issues, But Should We Sympathize?

It was only yesterday that AT&T announced that MMS would finally be enabled for the iPhone 3G and 3GS on September 25th.  In their announcement they touched on how they have been working non-stop to get their network souped-up and ready for the even greater amount of data usage, which was their reason for missing the summer launch window.  It looks like their PR department was hard at work as well, because AT&T was able to push out a video on the same day with their own “Seth the Blogger Guy” sympathetically explaining all of problems associated with data usage and more.

I guess it’s a smart move by AT&T to try and humanize such a large company with “Seth the Blogger Guy,” but is this one video going to change anything?  There’s nothing new here.  We were already aware that AT&T was spending tons of cash to upgrade their network, and we were already aware that they have been deploying their 850 MHz spectrum all over the country.  Does having it come from a human and not a press release make it any different?  Any better?  Are any of you less angry about MMS being delayed for so long after watching the video?

On a related note, I think I am going to start referring to myself as “Tyler the Blogger Guy,” just to see what kind of reaction I get.  It seems to work for Seth.

  1. Such a goofy f*ck! :D Anywho… Yeah… It doesn’t satisfy me any further. I have a reasonable amount of patience but this seems to be realy dragging down the timeline. At this rate, we won’t see AT&T 4G until 2015.

Finally, get ready for their Twitter feed ( twitter.com/shareatt or just reply to @shareatt with your Twitter client ) to get even more overwhelmed by likely complaints.

  2. So exactly how much bandwidth does an MMS message take? Hmmmm? Hello, ATT Wireless? Yes, you stupid fracks I’m talking to you. On a 3G network, it might take 10 seconds to send an MMS… hello??? Anyone home? Bueller? Bueller?

So, it takes less bandwidth using an internet radio app or Safari, which is being used for how long, compared to a 10 second MMS message?

Man, ATT Wireless must think all humans are frakking stupid.

  3. Screw MMS, I just want decent dependable reception and service — is that really so much to ask in 2009?! Seriously, I feel like I had better service, less dropped calls, and better reception when I had a Samsung phone with Cingular about 5 years ago!

This is ridiculous. And yet, without fail, every month, the good people at AT&T see it reasonable to charge me $30 for internet/data and $20 for text messaging, for a whopping total of over $200 per month for two iPhones?! And I can’t get upset that I have ZERO bars at my house and 1-2 bars at my office on a good day while balancing on my right foot?

I, like many people, truly feel and believe that the i

  4. I, like many people, truly feel and believe that the iPhone is quite possibly the greatest smartphone/cellphone/tech gadget created, but the AT&T network & customer service is the worst atrocity in human history.

Okay, maybe not the worst… but it’s in the running.

  5. i dont see how an mms would take up more bandwith than 90% of the data intensive apps in the app store.

  6. NOT DEFENDING AT&T BUT…. think about it for a moment. If all the iPhone users now have access to their picture messaging and stats show that iPhone users use the MOST of their data plans (and why not – the iPhone is a dream to use), couple that with NO CHARGE for MMS (well it goes along with your TXTing count), then I can see iPhone users really jumping onboard to use the feature.

One of the things I’m fairly certain of is that MMS uses the same freqs as TXT and not the DATA network that say SAFARI or any of the other 1000’s of apps use. SO it’s that part of the spectrum that is being beefed up. TXT messages use up bytes of info – 140 characters per message. MMS will be using the same carrier to the tune of KB’s or MB’s. so I can see that as a point. Remember MMS has been around for a long time and its not until recently that with the explosion of Smart Phones that people would use it 10 fold.

Now, ahem, WHERE IS IT? LOL.

Basically, I can see AT&T’s point. But at the same time they are a tremendously inferior system. But would the quantity of iPhone users in America suddenly moved to another provider be any better? We use our iPhones at 100%. WOuld we end up drowning them as well. We all know how people exclaim how good Verizon is but do they have the DATA capacity to handle us? Kind of hard to know since I’m sure that even with all the supposed smart phones on their network, do they use it as much as we do.

  7. MediaCurves.com just conducted a study on 601 mobile phone users viewing the recent YouTube video posted by AT&T which addresses common issues with the iPhone. Results showed that the majority (92%) reported that the video helped the phone carrier. The study also found that the majority (87%) of viewers reported the YouTube video was effective but that the video had no affect on favorability ratings for AT&T or the iPhone.
