The Dev-Team would like to let you know that you can now jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1, but only a select number of you. It seems that Apple has gone the extra mile this time to make the Dev-Team’s job a bit more difficult, so follow their directions carefully because this could get tricky.
The first generation iPhone, iPhone 3G, and first generation iPod touch are all able to be jailbroken with the newly released PwnageTool 3.1. The catch is that the tool is only available for Mac OS X.
The iPhone 3GS, the second and third-generaiton iPod touch are all incapable of being jailbroken at this time, but the Dev-Team has promised that redsn0w will be released sometime in the near future for Mac OS X and Windows, just be patient.
Here are a couple of tips for you lucky early iPhone and iPod touch users that you should heed before going ahead with the process. Actually, you should probably check out the entire Dev-Team blog post if you are even the slightest bit uncomfortable with jailbreaking. They have a much more detailed breakdown of the process and terminology.
- If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates.
- If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw

Ok, this may be a dumb question but… how do I know if I’m relying on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service? Is that referring to unlocking or just jailbreaking?
Sometimes I think I understand this stuff and then WHAM! I realize that I really am somewhat of a noob! Ha!
Ultrasn0w refers to unlocking. Basically, if you ever intend on unlocking your device (meaning bringing it over to a different carrier), don’t upgrade to 3.1 without PwnageTool created .ipsw. If you upgrade to 3.1 via Apple’s official update, you may never be able to unlock your phone again.
Tyler, Thanks…. no intention of unlocking… believe it or not, AT&T for me works great where I am, (St. Louis) Great signal basically all the time… but… my main question is… just to be on the safe side, should I upgrade to 3.1 via the Pwnage Tool and not iTunes? Not that I’m going to jailbreak… this is for uh… research…

I live in the Netherlands and I would like to watch flash sites, , I know I must jailbreak my iPhone but in Europe the iPhones are simlocked iPhones! I need to start from the top- I think I might need a walk-thru the process because it’s difficult to understand! Can you help me?
If you want to jailbreak and unlock then just type it on google:
e.g:
1. iPhone OS 2.2.1 jailbreak tutorial
2. iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak tutorial
3. iPhone OS 3.1 jailbreak tutorial.
IMPORTANT!!!!
It is necessary on what you have, PC or Mac, Mac is usually better for jailbreaking and you can only jailbreak 3.1 on Mac!!!

you can download OS 3.1 on Windows by downloading a Custom 3.1 software off the internet…. just type in Google, ‘Custom OS 3.1 download’

Hi, My name is Zain. I own an iPhone 3G and ever since I updated to 3.0 it has been saying ‘No Service’ (Even when unlocked). I recently updated it to 3.1 and it worked (thank God). That evening when I was going somewhere it lost all bars and said ‘No Service’. Now the funny thing is I continuously on/off the ‘Airplane Mode’ toggle and eventually I’m getting service, but when I go onto General< About< Network, it says ‘Not Available’ but when you look underneath it says Line and thats where it says ‘Network Name’ which is my network. I live in the UAE so it says ‘etisalat’.
When I was on 2.1 it always had service and the Network always said ‘etisalat’. And also next to the bars there was the Network name, in this OS it shows the bars only, so if someone can please help me because I am really worried.
By the way my iPhone is on 3.1 jailbroken and unlocked… Please HELP Me!
