MMS is Now Officially LIVE - More Ways to Use MMS Than you Would Expect

September 25, 2009

MMS

MMS should be officially live for everyone now, as AT&T has rolled it out during the morning hours. To update your iPhone, you simply plug it into itunes, and navigate to the iPhone screen. Just click update, and the carrier file will download (about 10 seconds). Then restart your device, and you're now ready to send all kinds of MMS to everyone. mms_picture Now it's great that MMS finally launched for the iPhone, but what's more interesting today is all of the different ways you can use MMS on the iPhone. Obviously you can send a picture, but that's not all. You can also send video (3GS only), a location, voice message, and even a contact.

Send

To send a photo or video it works the same way. You have three options. You can go into messages, and tap the camera icon to take a picture or video to directly send in a message. Or you can choose an existing picture or video from camera roll linked through messages. Not for pictures, but for videos you can go into camera roll, and view any video, and send a video mms through from the pop-up options. Not only can you use the on-screen options to send photos/videos, but you can copy a photo/video and paste it into a message. You can get an image from safari, e-mail, or your camera roll, and then just use apple's new copy paste method. mms_video Voice memos can be sent through MMS as well. Simply record a voice memo, and bring up the sharing options. Now included is an option to send it as an MMS. Contact information works the same way. You simply go to your contacts, and tap the share button, so now you can send any contact info you have to anyone else.

Receive

When you receive an MMS, you tap on the icon of the multi media item, to get a quick look at it. If it's an image it pops up full screen, where you can tap the share button to save it. A video or audio message will open through the iPod, and you can save those as well. If it's a location it takes you to google maps. Finally contact information pops up like you see in the phone app, except with added sharing and saving icons at the bottom. mms_contact

Edit

Also in messages is a new edit option. Inside edit you now have a line item deletion option as well as a forwarding option. Now inside messages you can delete individual lines, like mass delete in mail. It finally brings an end to only having the option to close the entire conversation in messages. Also inside edit is the option to forward to anyone, it's just not obvious that it would be under the edit option. There are multiple ways to use MMS using your iPhone, and all are super easy to do. Basically it's just like sending multi media items using e-mail before. Now there's just an option to use messages. What are you waiting for? Connect your iPhone to itunes, and get updating. What do you think of MMS finally on the iPhone. Also tell us if the update is working for you, and how AT&T's network is handling it.

Update

Thanks to our readers for pointing out that you have to reboot your iPhone after updating the carrier settings to enable MMS. [gallery link="file" columns="4"]
