Apple’s Looking Forward to Windows 7

In one week, Microsoft will release the much anticipated Windows 7 for PC’s around the world. Many preliminary reports say that this version of Windows is Microsoft’s best in a long time. Which is good, because the Washington based company desperately needs to redeem Windows after Vista. Microsoft is rightly excited about their new product, meant to “simplify your PC,” but Apple seems to be equally stoked about the new operating system.

If you have cable television, or just watch it on occasion, you’ve certainly seen the Mac vs. PC commercials where Justin Long – like an uncouth relative – harps on his opposite’s flaws. Fans of the cutesy commercials can look forward to a round of new ads targeted at the new Microsoft software.

Apple’s SVP of marketing, Phillip W. Schiller, says the impending Windows 7 launch “presents a very good opportunity” for the Cupertino (Calif.) company. Apple plans to point out, to consumers, how tedious and burdensome the upgrade process Windows XP users will have to go through to get to 7. Apple is counting on winning over millions of Windows PC owners because of this.

Schiller says: “Any user that reads all those steps [to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP] is probably going to freak out. If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?”

  1. It’s not a annoying process at all, I found it more easy upgrading windows OS’s to apple OS’s.

  2. I was actually seriously considering buying a Mac after a lifetime of being a PC user. But it seems that Snow Leopard is to Apple what Vista was to Microsoft. Every day I hear about what a piece of garbage it is. Guest accounts deleting user data? Does Apple even *try* their own stuff out before they release?

  3. If someone is going to buy new hardware to avoid having to upgrade some ancient machine running XP, why would they suddenly spend so much more on a Mac? Why wouldn’t they buy a PC and continue running all of their existing software for less?

  4. om riden the xp train n2 the ground

  5. Why not just buy a mac? Uh heres the thing mac cost twice as much then a laptop that is worth more your money. I could buy 2 extremely powerful laptops for the price of a mediocre mac.

  6. I love these responses about Macs being so much more expensive. I don’t dispute the fact that Macs are more expensive, but a computer is not just about the hardware. Have you looked at the support/maintenance? The OS running on that hardware? Resale value? I’m a Mac convert as of 2 years ago. I used PCs since the DOS 5.0 days (20+ years ago).

I don’t agree with Phil Schiller. The process to install Win 7 is cake and it is in fact, quite a nice OS. MS has done well. I don’t believe there will be many switchers at this point, like there was with Vista.

  7. Whatever…I’m on Vista and I really have no problems.

I could give two shits less about Mac’s. I have a laptop running Vista home prem. and I don’t think I would run out and spend 1400 for another laptop just because (assuming I was on XP) I have to go through some “tedious” steps.

It just goes to show that those who use PC’s and actually DECIDED to stay on XP shows they a) live under a rock or b) knew enough about PC’s to weigh the options and stay on XP. If b) then they will have no issues because they are probably already advanced users…the same, sadly, cannot be said about Mac users who get confused with several buttons on a mouse…

My name is Rez, and I’m a PC.

  8. Hmm well im a pc user like most people, but since im studyi gprograming. I feel very atracted to buy a mac and get the hest of both wolds by instaling windows 7 by bootcamp

  9. Vista works great for me (prob because I don’t try to run it with one gig of ram). But win7 is very cool so I will upgrade. Loving the beta and install was a piece of cake. Easiest os install ever in fact. Everything just works.

MACs are too expensive with too little software available and not compatible with business use. Resale value? I wouldn’t know – never tried to sell a used pc. I guess u have to think about that with macs since they are so damn expensive.
