Just a few hours ago George ‘geohot’ Hotz announced an update to his OS 3.1.2 “ALL device” jailbreak, blackra1n. If you don’t already know, blackra1n is an incredibly easy-to-use jailbreaking program perfect for those that don’t need to unlock their devices.
The update, RC2, provides a number of fixes for those that have not already run blackra1n. The update includes:
“Fixed 3G issues
Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB ipt 8GB and new 3GSes
Fixed Icy issues
Both Windows and Mac
If you used RC1 with success, no need to rerun”
You can get RC2 at blackra1n.com. Follow the instructions below.
Note: blackra1n is best for users who have upgraded to or have a device that came with OS 3.1 or 3.1.2, but it will NOT allow you to unlock your device.
Step 1: Read ALL the instructions first.
Step 2: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
Step 3: Download the latest OS firmware if you haven’t already updated.
Step 4: Download blackra1n RC2 at blackra1n.com.
Step 5: Connect your device to your computer and launch the blackra1n app.
Step 6: Click “make it ra1n” and let the application run. A picture of George Hotz will appear while your device is in recovery mode.

Step 7: Wait until your phone automatically reboots. A new blackra1n app icon will appear on the springboard. Click the blackra1n icon to launch blackra1n on your device.

Step 8: From here you will be able to install Cydia, Rock, or Icy on your device. (Do not install more than one installer on your device)
Step 9: After your selected installer app appears on the springboard, you may uninstall blackra1n from your device by launching it and chosing “uninstall blackra1n.”

Step 10: Reboot your device.
Let us know how blackra1n RC2 works for you.

Do you have to do anything different if you have the “new” 3GS? I know they changed the bootrom in the newly shipped 3GSs. Geohot said someting about a “tethered” jailbreak for those phones… Not sure what that means.
You shouldn’t have to do anything different with your new 3GS. This update is supposed to work on all new 3GS models, even the recently shipped.
Thanks Eric.
Worked like a charm! I tried to jailbreak my 3G probably 30 different times on 3 different computers using RC1, all to no avail. With RC2, it just took one try, and I didn’t have to do anything fancy.
“If you used RC1 with success, no need to rerun”
What does this mean exactly? I jailbroke with RC1…do I need to do anything else to receive the new updates? The fixed 3G issues and tethering hack?
Still getting the RC1 release, and it still doesn’t work.
Never mind, had to clear cache.
I’ve closed out itunes and killed the ituneshelper and it sticks at entering recovery… any tips…?
