Verizon Airs Anti-iPhone Ad

Posted by Alexander Vaughn on: October 17th, 2009, 9.43 pm

Verizon just started airing its new Android campaign, the idea is basically to put the iPhone on the spot by showing what it lacks and how the (An)droid allegedly surpasses iPhone OS. All of this using Apple’s Myriad Pro font. Looks pretty desperate to me, what do you think ?

  1. Dumb!!! It doesn’t even mention Version or even what a droid is???Average person won’t even know… Wasted money on their part, at least in my opinion…

    • NO, Brilliant! by getting people thinking and really pushing Droid without the (an)droid it gets people craving more info and people go nuts researching on their own to self marketing of something they did not know exist. BUT, when you do such a thing you have to have the money to back yourself up, so when time comes… you can push the real info for those that are lazy like you.

      • “…gets people craving more info and people go nuts researching on their own to self marketing of something they did not know exist.”

Someone has been drinking a lot of kool-aid.

For the record some people aren’t “lazy” – they just don’t get sucked into those kinds of advertising campaigns. Evidently it works a treat on others though.

  2. I think when it comes closer to launch Apple should release their own ads like the “Get a Mac” ads except talking about what droid doesn’t. For example, download Movie and TV shows anywhere with WiFi or have access to games from great developers like EA. I’m a big Android fan, but I don’t like the idea their marketing is going because at present I don’t feel it’s a superior platform though it could be with some work. The Hero could’ve been great if it weren’t for the hardware for example, but stock android is not really that special. It just feels like WinMo with a spit shine.

  3. Hate to said it, but I believe is a nice Ad, simple but they will reach is market. But it has some dumb arguments like: “pictures in the dark”, “real keyboard”and “simultaneous apps”. Well I don’t care I love my iPhone!!

  4. My only problem with the ad is that it assumes that the viewer can read all the text flying by. I’m no speed reader… Heck, I can’t read as fast as it was moving by. I had to pause the ad to be able to read some of the things that “i” couldn’t do.

Actually, I have to chuckle every time I see an ad that puts the iPhone down. It shows that who ever the ad is for is nervous about the iPhone.

I have to chuckle because if it were not for the iPhone, we wouldn’t be seeing ads boasting about things like apps, touch screens, etc… We would still be having to deal with crapy Windows Mobile phones that use a stylus to interact with or blackberry’s.

Plus, when you look at the “list” of things that the iPhone doesn’t do according to the ad, it’s not all that much. Simultaneous apps is the only thing I even remotely care about. The rest I either don’t need or want.

Oops…forgot to say great post! Looking forward to your next one.

  6. i hate verizon so i think its stupid on their part

  7. This ad seems like the ridiculous ad wars from the 90’s between sega and nintendo. I tend to dislike marketing that attacks another corporations flaws because it is a lazy way to advertise to people. Instead of pushing the highlights of the product directly they feel that it’s necessary to trash the competitor. I wouldn’t even feel right doing something like that. Who wants to win by telling everyone that the competition is awful so pick me. That was the issue with John Kerry I’m the 2004 election. This in conjunction with the there’s a map for that ads are just unnecessary. Even the mac vs pc ads I feel shouldn’t be there. Just show people what they need to know and push your own product and it’s benefits.

  8. No more desperate than the “I’m a Mac” adverts. The advert makes good points about what the iPhone is lacking. Hopefully this will make Apple keep up with the competition so we can see better features on the iPhone. I for one would love to not have to jailbreak my iPhone to unlock its potential.

  9. I thought that verion will be carrying the Iphone next, so are marketing against something that may possilbly have next year

  10. Darwin: “I think when it comes closer to launch Apple should release their own ads like the “Get a Mac” ads except talking about what droid doesn’t.”

Not a chance, only the underdog should pull that kind of stunt. The iPhone is the phone the others are compared to, it dominates the conversation. But this kind of comparative ad campaign may be well suited for Droid. This is a new entrant, it has no mindshare whatsoever. Thus Verizon has to make a big splash and pretend it’s superior to the reining champion, to draw as much attention as possible.

  11. I think it’s great (*sarcasm*) that VZW has taken a “smear campaign” approach to marketing all of a sudden.
The new “we have an App for that” showing how bad AT&T’s coverage is I think I’ve seen this commercial before and now marketing what their product will have that the iPhone doesn’t…
    great originality.
How about an original idea VZW !
