  1. The Secret of Monkey Island so far is my favorite, but I haven’t played that many so it is almost by default….

  2. Bayv, I will be very close since my most fave adventure is Monkey Island II: LeChuck’s Revenge. LucasArts did a best point and click’s adventures of all times!

  3. My favorite would have to be Day of the Tentacle.

  4. I would have to say my best point and click adventures are monkey island, only a shame cannon fodder isn’t classed as one lol

  5. Easily, Secret of Monkey Island is my favorite PaC game of all-time!

  6. Definitely Secret of Monkey Island is my favorite point and click adventure =P The humor + setting were all it took.

  7. The Secret of Monkey Island followed closely by King’s quest.

  8. Mine has to be Grim Fandango, but I loved all of those classic Lucasarts games.

  9. Sam & Max Hit the Road.

LucasArts used to be my favourite developer in the nineties. I still own most of their library back from the days when PC games came in those huge unwieldy cardboard boxes. I can’t imagine I’ll ever let them go. Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig… oh my. I think I’ll install ScummVM again…

I had played several pointy-click adventures before S&M, but by the time this title came out my fluency in the English language (not a native speaker) had evolved to a point where I could truly appreciate the quirky dialogue, resulting in an exceptionally memorable experience.

  10. Definitely Grim Fandango and from the new generation of games The Book of Unwritten Tales

  11. Haven’t played a lot from that genre but some Myst and Riven.

  12. This is a tough call. Either “The Secret of Monkey Island” or “Myst”.

  13. Nothing can beat Day of the Tentacle. Close in its wake Grim Fandango, Indiana Jones and of course Monkey Island.

  14. Obviously the Police Series by Sierra; I hope they bring them back somehow.

  15. Obviously the Police Quest Series by Sierra; I hope they bring them back somehow.

  16. It has go tto be Secret of Monkey Island no question

  17. It has got to be Secret of Monkey Island no question

  18. Definitely Day Of The Tentacle for me. Fantastic characters, mind bending time travelling gameplay and, the ultimate villain, a psychotic purple tentacle. What’s not to like?! I even played it without sound back in the day when Soundblaster sound cards didn’t come as standard, and from what people say, the score and voices were a class apart too. (Do this one next, please, Lucasarts/Telltale – or get Double Fine to do it).

Special mention goes to Charles Cecil’s Broken Sword 1 though, such a beautifully put together game, and the director’s cut on DS is even better. Looking forward to the iphone version of that, especially if it’ll have the interface of the DS version together with the voices and cut scenes from the Wii. I’ve just started playing through BASS, having missed out on it first time round, and it’s a gem.

  19. My all time favorite is Indiana Jones – Fate of Atlantis, probably because it was one of the first from LucasArts I got my hands on.

  20. You know, a few weeks ago it would’ve been the first two Monkey Island games. Although the Sierra games, especially the Space Quest series would have been close behind.

Now, I did play Beneath a Steel Sky when it came out in the nineties, and remember loving it, but over the years completely forgot about it. After playing the new iPhone release, I have to say that it really is one of the best point and click games out there. The mix between the dystopian future and the inherent comedy throughout the game makes for a truly enjoyable experience.

I remember rumors of a sequel years and years ago, and I hope any success of this release prompts a continuation of the series. How great would that be??

    Thanks.

    Jay

  21. The Secret of Monkey Island for sure!

  22. Leisure Suit Larry… FTW
The early Al Lowe days though.

  23. I guess Broken Sword 1. I have a lot of love for Monkey Island series as well. And special place there for Legend of Kyrandia, since it is the first point&click adventure game I ever played. :)

  24. Full Throttle by LucasArts.

  25. My favourite adventure game is Day of the Tentacle :)

  26. I think that would be “Space Vixens” on my Amiga 500.

  27. Maniac Mansion – Day of the Tentacle

  28. The Secret of Monkey Island is the best yet!

  29. Monkey Island, I think.
Many thanks for opening up this one to the ‘rest of the world’!

    Regards

  30. Has to be Grim Fandango for me. Sure, I love Monkey Island, Sam and Max, DoTT, The Dig etc, but for me, Grim Fandango was the pinnacle of classic adventure games. The story was close to perfect, the art design was fantastic, and anyone who didn’t get drawn into the world had a heart of stone. Add compelling vo work, and it’s a crime that it didn’t do better.

  31. Okay, second day and I’ve had more time to think… I still think Beneath a Steel Sky is one of the best, though. But, some others came to mind over the past day.

Remeber Tass Time in Tonetown? That was wild! It was a super clever game that told its story exclusively through its style. I remember playing it and realizing that it was something incredibly original. Can you image that game redone today with current technology? It’d be nuts!

I agree with the other posters, Day of the Tentacle was super fun. But let’s not forget Maniac Mansion which started it all. In fact, kudos to Lucas Games for a great run. Their entire collection was top notch – Loom, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, the Dig, all highlights in gaming.

Plus a special honorable mention needs to be given to Sierra and their point-and-clicks, especially their King’s Quest series. I remember playing it back in 85??? First one ever. Plus, the catalog of games that came after (hit and miss, all) did push the genre in quality and technology. Long live Roger Wilco!

    Anyway, enough rambling. Until tomorrow!!!

p.s. I can’t wait until we start talking about text adventures. You’ll open the floodgates, then!

    Thanks.

    Jay

  32. It is amazing how many good games were made 10 years ago and most of new ones (for PC at least) don’t come even close. Everything these days is in low-poly 3D which is just plain ugly. Games used to be hand-drawn and a lot of effort went into that.

But there was another kind of genre that started appearing too. It was cinematic with lots of video footage. One that comes to mind is Gabriel Knight 2 – The Beast Within. Game was practically a movie with few interactions here and there, but it was well put together. This game is also one of my favorites, besides Indiana Jones.

  33. My favorite is Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People.

  34. My favourite point and click adventure has to be Sam & Max: Hit the Road. The original classic, and definitely humorous Lucasarts title! Every time I think of that game, I think of all the good times in that era :)

One that SHOULD come out for the iPhone, that’s for sure!

  35. Beneath the steel sky :)

  36. Secret of Monkey Island is definetely the best. Love the controls and the voice overs. I’ve been playing this game as a kid, and now on the iPhone, awesome.

  37. Grim Fandango is far and away my favourite point-and-click adventure. Tugs at the heartstrings oh so sweetly.

  38. The one that I will never forget and which I played through several times is Loom. What a ground-breaker that was! :)

  39. I guess Broken Sword 1. I have a lot of love for Monkey Island series as well. And special place there for Legend of Kyrandia, since it is the first point&click adventure game I ever played.

  40. Loom, hands-down. It was a staggeringly beautiful production and wonderfully fleshed out. If only they would remake it with the full text of the original version, combined with the speech and high-res (VGA!) graphics of the CD version. Add in a remixed soundtrack, and it’s gold. It’s a shame it never got the sequel that was planned. I always wondered what happened to Bobbin. Oh, and more Rusty Nailbender, please :)

  41. Has to be Myst! I think it changed the ‘game’…

  42. Oh, forgot to mention Indiana Jones Fate of the Atlantis! Another masterpiece from LucasArts. Too bad that I missed Beneath a Steel Sky those days :(

  43. The Secret of Monkey Island

  44. I mentioned Secret of Monkey Island and Myst already, but I was also a huge fan of Legend of Kyrandia, even though I never finished it.

  45. Absolute favourite’s a difficult one… I think I’d have to go with Grim Fandango, love the characters, style and the story. :)

  46. Secret of Monkey Island ftw =D

  47. Day Three – Boy has this been fun, dragging out old memories. Times were simpler then and gaming was certainly much more innocent.

One recollection was that Beneath a Steel Sky seemed to take much longer when I originally played it. I remember getting stuck many times and spending days trying to figure out the solution. Maybe the new iPhone interface makes it a bit easier (and YES, I’ll admit I did use the hint function a few times, banish the thought!) That end, too. Was it new?? Years later, Joey creating a world of Foster clones?? What a great jump off to a new series. Anyway, I look forward to letting some time pass and playing it again.

A couple of more point-and-clicks came to memory since yesterday, though. I remember the Hero’s Quest (or Quest for Glory or whatever they renamed it) was fun. Point and clicking with some RPG elements thrown in. Police Quest was gritty and I remember being surprised at the violence. Remember Gabriel Knight? That was a dark one, too. Sierra, really pioneered most of these types of games, and it’s sad how the company ended up basically falling apart. (Look at what happened to Infocom. Very sad…) I’m glad that Lucas has been reinvigorated with the new Money Island game and hope this will see a resurgence in new point and clicks.

Anyway, lucky you, it’s day three and thus ends my daily ramblings of day long past. I do miss them, though.

    Thanks for listening.

    Jay

  48. Um, I’m not sure, but I would still love to win this.

  49. Myst/Riven

  50. I guess Broken Sword 1. I have a lot of love for Monkey Island series as well. And special place there for Legend of Kyrandia, since it is the first point&click adventure game I ever played. That remembers me that I still haven’t played all those Tales of Monkey Island episodes I pre-ordered. Damn I need more time.

  51. Another favorite of mine would be The Dig.

  52. I’ll say it again then: Grim Fandango. The story, the characters and the jokes made this game something else.

  53. Agreed – has to be Grim Fandango (as I posted before). Manny ftw :)

  54. For me it is Simon the Sorcerer that sticks in my mind!

Point and click, those were the days!

    Cheers,

    Steve

  55. The first point and click to grab me was Gobliiins 2: The Prince Bafoon. Those wacky little fellas made me laugh :D

  56. Space Quest 4 is the most memorable, so I’ll go with that.

  57. Deifnitely Sierra’s Space Quest and Quest for GLory… form my childhood.

After playing the SumVV version of Beneath a Steel Sky, that one’s my favorite of all-time!
