As we’ve been announcing for a couple of days now, George Hotz (Geohot) just released a new Jailbreak (Blackra1n) and Unlock (Blacksn0w) solution.
So if you want to jailbreak your phone or unlock it here is what to do :
First of all you need to be on the latest firmware and baseband, if you’re not, just plug your iPhone and press update in iTunes. It’s safe to do so.
If you’re already at 3.1.2 and have already used Blackra1n before and you still have the blackra1n app on your springboard then :
Launch blackra1n app on your iPhone. You will see Icy replaced by an option “ra1n”. Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see “sn0w”. Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
In every other case
Upgrade to 3.1.2 if you didn’t yet.
Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click “make it ra1n”. When your phone reboots, you’ll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
This is a solution for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, you don’t need it for the 2G.
If you already jailbroke your iPhone and just want to unlock, a separate Blacksn0w package will be available in cydia soon.
Once you’re done, do not update your iPhone anymore under any circumstances, Apple will probably come up with a fix soon and you don’t want to loose the unlock/jailbreak.
If you need even more details, iClarified.com has a walkthrough for Mac or Windows users.

Geohot is a genius!!!
I’m tempted to try this but I’ve never jailbroken or unlocked my iPhone. A few questions though.
1.Does it work correctly with iTunes after installation?
2.Do the apps that I already have installed work correctly?
3.I regret installing it, can I bring back my iPhone to how it was before?
4. Are there any problems with making calls, texting, or e-mails, after installing?
5. Can I update “Normal” iTunes apps as usual by syncing with iTunes?
Hey, thanks for reading AppAdvice
1. Absolutely, it works great and you won’t see any difference
2. Absolutely too. I had a bug once but all I had to do was uninstall and reinstall the app (was facebook) and it worked again.
3. Absolutely, at any moment you plug your phone to itunes and press restore. There will be no trace whatsoever, it will be like brand new.
4. Not at all
5. Yes you can, everything stays the same with your normal apps and the iTunes ecosystem. Just don’t update your iPhone firmware next time it comes up so you can keep the jailbreak.
If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Cheers
Thanks Alexander! I’m currently enjoying my newly jailbroken iPhone.
might be an insanely stupid question, but can I get push updates to work with a different sim than the original ?
Absolutely!
On top of that push notifications are linked to your device and not your sim card, so even after you swapped you’ll be still getting the same notifications.
Thankeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, thankes, thankes!!!!!!
jailbreaked, unlocked, 16GB 3GS, thankeeees!!!!
