Sky Defender by InnovaDev is a fun little top-down survival shooter that is now available in the App Store for free for a limited time.

skydefender_screen1Sky Defender is like all other top-down survival shooters, except instead of running around on the ground, you will be piloting a small plane.  The game requires you to survive wave after wave of enemy pilots by dodging them with your left thumbstick and shooting them down with your right one.  Some enemies will drop power-ups that will assist you in your quest to clear the skies of all wrongdoers.

The game is fairly basic, with only options to toggle health meters on or off, and the ability to play in Expert Mode, but that’s what arcade games are all about.  Simple fun.  It also features OpenFeint, so you will have your usual online leader boards and achievements to unlock.

Sky Defender was originally available in the App Store for $1.99, but it is now available for free for a limited time.

The game is currently sitting at a two and a half star rating, but don’t be turned away by that.  It is likely that some of the bad reviews come from the lack of in-game instructions.  When I first took to the skies, I had no idea what was going on, so I turned to the app’s description to figure it out.  I suppose the bad ratings could also be from people who just don’t enjoy the game since it does have some faults, including losing your plane under your thumbs, but it’s free, so just give it a shot.

  1. This may just be the worst iPhone game I’ve ever played. The controls are TERRIBLE. Near impossible to get the plane going in the direction you want it to go and it seems to love flying over to the corner where the controls are so you can’t see a thing. Worst app you’ve suggested since I started watching your site.

    • I guess it’s a good thing it’s free then. ;)

I will make a note not to recommend free games that have objects flying under your thumbs. But honestly, I had fun playing it.

  2. Sorry. I didn’t mean to come off as a jerk. Just my opinion. I wasn’t discrediting your opinion. I’m honestly glad you had fun with it and you’re right, while it’s free, everybody should give it a try and form their own opinion.

    • No need to apologize. You didn’t come off as a jerk. Games are tough to judge because each and every one of use enjoys something different. I am glad you voiced your opinion, and don’t hesitate to do so in the future. We love to hear from all of you, as long as it’s in good taste, and your comment was absolutely fine.

  3. Hi. I think its a good game.

Could you please make an applist with apps with openfeint. Maybe also agon and plus ?
