Electricpig managed to snap a couple pictures of this interesting device by Qualcomm. It’s called the Flo TV and it’s a proof-of-concept that would allow you to watch live TV on your iPhone.

The trick consists in an external device capturing the TV signal, recompressing it and streaming it to the iPhone over WiFI. I have no idea why Qualcomm would develop such a device, honestly it sounds complicated and very battery consuming.

Does anybody still watch TV anyway?

  1. Sweet. Perfect for watching TV in bed; MacBook is difficult to see. Yes, still managing after the DTV ripoff. Careful what you say about the idiot box, my friend.

  2. Personally, I’d prefer to see a TV tuner app and hardware combo (something that connects to the dock connector.

    Maybe one day.

  3. Interested, maybe. I do watch a few broadcast shows and it would be cool to be able to stream them to my iPhone over the network. A plugin for Win7 Media Center would be really sweet.

  4. What advantage does this have over a SlingBox? Besides not being available over 3g due to AT&T….

  5. I’ve been watching live Tv on my iPhone for over a year. I use the app named “Orb” from the app store. It streams from my home PC that I put a cheap tuner card into from eBay. Now all my horrible Sundays stuck at work are torrible since I watch all the NFL games on my phone. It works over edge, 3G, and wifi like a champ!

  6. just use http://iPhone.TVCatchup.com to stream live TV over 3G and the SkyMobile app does a great job over WiFi no need for xtra gadgets!

  7. Softbank in Japan has been providing an iPhone accessory for watching terrestrial digital TV http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/iphone/oneseg/
