The developer of iBart (a transit application for San Francisco) had apparently a very nice surprise today. While consulting his Pinchmedia report he discovered that his app has been installed and used on an device that identifies itself as “iPhone 3.1″ :
PinchMedia who provides the analytics for the application breaks down customer usage including what specific devices are being used. This list of devices is reported to developers using internal device identification numbers assigned by Apple. In this case, “iPhone3,1″ was first spotted in Pandav’s usage logs in November.
The latest iPhone, the 3GS identifies itself as “iPhone 2.1″ so apparently the new iPhone model would be undergoing real life tests in the San Francisco area.
All of this is not really surprising actually, the 3GS model was also first spotted online around november 2008 and we already saw references to the new model in Apple’s iPhone firmware.
I’m personally hoping that it will feature a shaver and the latest ARM dual-core processors… you?
[Update] One of our commenters (Who would apparently be Saurik, Cydia’s creator) is pointing out an interesting fact : It is actually possible to “fake” your device identifier by jailbreaking your iPhone and changing the system files.
Also, don’t get excited about the picture, it’s a fake of course.
Would this just be a hoax?

The picture is amazing…i want it now! Can’t wait till June 2010!
That picture is so fake. Im guessing you already know that. I still wouldnt be surprised if Apple does put a camera in the front of the phone.
They really need to.
Plus the 4G connection would be fabulous
And change a-gps to full fledged gps.
@Andrew: A-GPS is “full-fledged” GPS and then some. The “A” stands for “Assisted,” which means that while the GPS chip is trying to find a satellite, the cellular radio is triangulating your location. By the time the GPS has found a satellite, the phone already knows its general surroundings, then the GPS then pinpoints you on a map. For comparison, ever notice how a standalone GPS unit (like a Garmin or TomTom) takes so long to acquire a satellite signal, while a device with A-GPS finds it within seconds?

Derek Jeter Jr, cool! Didn’t know he had a son, lol… Wonder if he is a playa like his pops ;^/…
i hope the next iphone has a faster processor and a LOUD speakerphone. other than that most of my issues with the iphone are software based…
Someone out there with a jailbroken phone is having an amazing laugh over this ;P.
Yeah L☺L
Cydia is the best, better than installous
You can do amazing stuff with a jailbroken device-including itouch
Great Work Jay ;P.
Why would someone with a jailbroken phone being having a laugh over this? Please explain!
I hope they take apple’s classic aluminum and black-under-glass design to the iphone and also refine the OS a bit. Sure it’s simple, but there need to be some short-cuts and some way to multitask.
Hey Jay Freeman, your that guy from Cydia! (Is that really you or is it an imposter?) And I am having a laugh over this.
Interesting point, if it’s what I think Saurik is simply saying that this story is a hoax.
Someone might have changed his iPhone identifier by modifying the system files and caused this fuss. I am not sure if this fools Pinchmedia tho.
Am I right?
Could be Alex, but I am having a laugh ☺ -even with my itouch(1G)
P.S-thanks Alex for the news
Pretty close there Alexander. And it’s obvious the iPhone 4G is fake, too.
My question for the AppAdvice guy is … did they say how MANY phones were using the iPhone3,1 identifier? IF they’re going to test a prototype, then they’re probably going to have more than one phone out there. I halfway believe this story because of what you said about the iPhone 3GS prototype testing around this time last year. I guess only time will tell.
Next week we’ll see iPhone 5,1 in usage logs for fart apps.
The coming of iPhone 4G is a welcome change
Changing for the better is always good.
