Wow, Verizon just dropped a new anti-iPhone ad and it’s getting really dirty. The first one was already edgy, then came the “there is a map for that” one which ended up in a lawsuit. All this added to persistent rumors of a Verizon compatible iPhone, we could honestly expect this to stop.
Well, not at all, Verizon comes back harder than ever and attacks the device by pretty much saying it’s an “old toy” and throws AT&T’s 3G coverage map in the mix, they are so desperate… Here is the ad:
Nonetheless it is great marketing, this Christmas themed ad is going to get a lot of buzz which is exactly what they are aiming for. AT&T’s coverage does suck but unfortunately our staff tried the Droid this weekend and it’s still far from being as good as the iPhone, especially in terms of user experience.
Needless to say, you won’t be seeing an iPhone on Verizon anytime soon ever.
The business of business is business but come on, this is just mean, what do you think?
[Update, there are a few of them actually]

It is sad that Verizon has to stoop down to these anti-iPhone / At&t ads. I have never had another service carrier other than At&t and I will agree that Verizon had superior coverage in the area I live ( Knoxville, TN ).
All facts aside I love iPhone. I’ve pondered the question of switching if Verizon was to get the iPhone but I really don’t find my At&t service that unbearable. Spotty at times but never frustrating enough to the point of hate.
I think Verizon is slowly destroying all hope they have of getting the iPhone. But if Apple doesn’t care about their phone’s pride then it’s just another sales burst for Apple.
I love it and I own a iPhone. Makes you wander Why apple went with Att in the first f@@k-n place. …. I’m in Glasgow ky and my local Att store don’t even sell a damn iPhone. Call them and see.
). Just wainting for the next big thing. …. Lol. Ps. The add just kicks you in the balls hahaha.
How is Verizon attacking ATTs network coverage any more sad than Apple doing their Mac vs. PC spoofs? Personally I find the new Verizon ad funny… Apple’s are getting tired.
Marc, I completely agree. Apple haven’t exactly behaved ‘nicely’ to their own rivals. There are many similarities between Verizon’s smart-phones and Apple computers – both are competing with giants that currently dominate the market.
Competition is healthy. The iphone isn’t perfect. Good competition will make sure apple continues to raise their game. Also, I thought the ad was pretty funny even though personally I would not conduct my own business in this way (direct attacks at competitors).
I don’t like negative ads when anybody does it, but Verizon’s seem to be especially bad. Verizon is not exactly Apple’s direct competitor. In a couple years they could be partners, which would be very good for Verizon, unless all hopes of that ever happening have been squashed in previous negotiations.
Have any of you guys seen the recent commercials for Windows phone that shows the apps following people around to work and stuff? Those are cute, they target the iPhone market, but without making themselves look desperate. What they say to me is, “here’s an alternative to the iPhone, especially if you like Windows integration.” That’s an approach that makes me more receptive to learning about the product. Verizon’s ads are like a 5-year-old child throwing a temper tantrum. Somewhere in there might be a good product but I’ve already tuned out.
I disagree. Apple’s Mac vs. Pc adds are funny and somewhat true. Verizons ads are lame. I personally don’t hate Att because I have service. But that’s just my perspective.
The first one was clever and funny but the other two were very dull. I do wish the iPhone would appear on the Verizon network though, that is the only thing holding me back from getting one. I can’t really blame Verizon for these ads, cause isn’t Apple doing this to Microsoft? Though they do come off a little harsh. Anyways does it really matter??? Honestly, do you think a couple of stupid Christmas ads are going to bring down the iPhone? It’s gonna take some nice hardware to go with that network, and based on what I’ve heard of the Droid, I think Apple should focus on other things, like the Apple Slate!
Verizon is desperate their 3g is inferior.
The Fanboyism seething from all of the iPhone blogs lately is getting REALLY annoying. To the point where I want to remove them from my Google Reader after a year of being subscribed. So a real competitor is finally on the scene. So what. Just keep reporting on iPhone apps, please. Stop pretending like Verizon’s ads are a personal attack on YOU. It’s silly.
I expect it from commenters. But to see it seeping into the posts is genuinely annoying.
This isn’t that fanboyish, I’m just providing you with news that are iPhone related and I believe this one will be a great topic on tomorrow’s coffee breaks! What I’m trying to say here is that it’s not good business to run this kind of ads. Where I live, negative and comparative ads are illegal and we are all just better off.
its sad that Verizon is going this low to say AT&T has poor 3G service. i gotta say the 3G coverage in my opinion is very good… its spotty at times but it is still very good… Verizon is saying that AT&T’s 3G service is very very poor when is it really not!! VERIZON FAILS!
Well I am hardly an Apple fanboy I own Linux computers.
I find it funny that Verizon bashes the iPhone and yet just 4 days ago their CEO admitted they want it.
This is business. Quit complaining.
Providing news is fine. That’s what you do. I’m glad you made me aware of the commercials. But the fanboy commentary – not news – that went along with them is obviously what I’m talking about.
I think you guys are fanboys…
Also, I don’t think you guys are watching the same ad that I am…. In this commercial verizon is clearly complimenting the iPhone by saying the great things that it will do and how people will love it, then goes on to show that the reason it is there (the island of misfit toys) is because of the service alone. Verizon is being nice to apple here so it can still be seen as a potential carrier for apple to switch over to. Actually none of these adds say ANYTHING bad about the iPhone. They all bash AT&T’s 3G coverage only.
And to the person who said that Verizon’s service was inferior… They said they had 5x more coverage. They never said it was faster.
I saw the “misfit toys” ad on TV again last night, and on 2nd viewing, it definitely comes off more as an attack on AT&T than on the iPhone, although of course they use the iPhone silently in the ad to make the point.
AT&T and Verizon both have terrible coverage in some places I’ve lived and worked. I would like to see them both get on each other’s case so that they are forced to improve service to keep up with the competition.
I have been a customer of both in recent years, and I have to say I’m impressed with how much Verizon has built out their EVDO network since I was with them. AT&T’s site won’t even show a map of their 3G coverage, it’s just a list of cities. I don’t know what more motivation AT&T needs to fix that, besides millions of iPhone users and their money, but if Verizon calls them out on it, maybe that will help.
version make such nice toys for phone In video this look very nice and attractive
I LOVE this campaign, simply because Apple and AT&T are getting what they had coming. It is heartwarming sweet justice that everything Apple fought so hard to keep people from doing with their iPhones now comes back to bite them.
