According to Chitika, a mobile advertisement company, almost 50% of all iPods Touch users are still running old 2.0 firmware. How can we explain that?

Well, we might think it’s the update fee, but paying the $10 is apparently not the issue. Turns out the real problem seems to be the lack of motivation for upgrading. Unless you want to play with copy/paste, the 3.0 update doesn’t bring much to the iPod Touch; Push notifications are useless on Wi-Fi and many games still run on 2.0.

You’d think with these reasons Apple would consider dropping the fee.

Any of you still holding off?

  1. This of course doesnt count those still on 1.0 with no clue about how to use the device?

  2. This is why Apple needs to consider a wireless update. Many users sync to their computer once to get their data and their music, then buy apps and music wirelessly after that.

  3. Actually, push notifications are great when on wifi. I use Sportacular on my iPod Touch and its push notifications for score updates are really handy.

  4. Note that the fee is only five dollars for iPod Touch users and free for iPhone.

Thus, it’s easy to see why so many iPhone users upgraded. I think that a wireless update would be great but not necessary. If so many people were against syncing (don’t get me wrong, I am one) then there would be a lot more iPhone users who haven’t upgraded.

I think that Apple just needs to package either better features or a better marketing scheme in order to get more iPod Touch users to upgrade.
