Driver, a game that made its debut on Sony’s original Playstation, is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch thanks to the hard working folks at Gameloft.

driver screen1 300x200 Take The Wheel In Driver, Now Available In The App StoreIn Driver, you are an undercover cop named Tanner who is posing as a getaway driver in order to expose a national crime ring.  Just like in the original game, you won’t actually be leaving your vehicle, but you will be taking part in a variety of missions such as stopping other cars with your own, delivering stolen vehicles, and transporting important figures in the crime ring.

The game features 40 missions spanning across four giant cities, which includes Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City.  Each city has working traffic lights, wandering pedestrians, and moving traffic with cops who are always on patrol, which means, at least at times, you must abide by the rules, otherwise you will be forced to outrun the police.  Driver also features exceptional driving physics, revamped visuals that take full advantage of the iPhone’s graphical power, a 70s inspired soundtrack, and three other gameplay modes besides the campaign.

Driver is now available in the App Store for $6.99.  This one is definitely worth a purchase if you are a fan of driving games in any way, shape, or form.

  1. Hmm…The physics looks good but the enviroment looks really bad. I’m not sure if I’m going to buy it…

    • It’s a port from the original PSX title ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driver_(video_game) ). I still have my PSX copy actually. Among a few other titles I picked up cheap way back. Looks to be the same graphics and even maps ( levels ). The racing striped light blue car seems to be an addition to this port though. I played it a LOT. Used it with the previously available Connectix Virtual Game Station ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connectix_Virtual_Game_Station ). The only flaw to the original game was it’s impossibly difficult final mission.

  2. This was a great game back in the day…if you didn’t invest the time to learn how to drive the vehicle you couldn’t really enjoy this game.

I wonder if you still have to pass the test in the begining in the parking deck…was great to play with the police….i used to rear end them at a light and then go on a long run hitting jumps and everything. This was before GTA’s time and probably what led to GTA.

Anyway…I’m sure its a great game…graphically it never was a great one…but game play wise…very good.

    • It was an original PSX title, so the graphics weren’t bad for the era. I know what you mean about messing with the cops. Hours of fun, especially in San Francisco with all of those hills. :-)

  3. When I saw this I was hped because I thought it was a GTA styled game. When I saw it was released i was even more hyped. I was downloading it (Jailbroken) I watched a reveiw and they said you couldn’t get out of your car… and i was like wtf… I have driver for the xbox and you can definitaly get out of the car… so I canceled my download and said ill wait for GTA CTW for the iPhone. I think its in the works.

    • Sorry dude. You have never been able to get out of the car in the original Driver, which this game is.

  4. Pity this was released by Gameloft. After trying several of their games they’re the only publisher that I refuse to buy from. The Asphalt 5 cop chase debacle was the last straw after a series of unplayable, poorly designed, not just plain not fun games. I enjoy driving games and usually purchase them, but there’s no way I’m going to waste a dime on another title by gameloft, let alone seven bucks.

My advice to people thinking about this purchase, wait a week or two and then read the reviews.
