iTunes Voice Recognition Hits The iPhone For Free

Voice recognition finally just hit the App Store with Dragon Dictate. We were actually expecting this from Apple since they even have a patent for it but Nuance communication, the company behind Dragon NaturallySpeaking just did it.

It’s a very straightforward but incredibly powerful app. I tried it a couple times and even with my extremely weird accent it still worked decently. It then lets you send your text to the clipboard to use it in any app or directly put it in an email.

It’s free for a limited time so grab it quickly.

  1. Not out here in the uk anyone know if it will be free here anytime soon?

  2. Not to be found in the Swedish store .. :/

  3. Not on UK store either :(

  4. Neither the Danish :( ((((

  5. Same problem for me in the Swedish Store :(

  6. It’s not in the Canadian one either

  7. Wow this works really well. I’m surprised at how well it gets everything right the first time.

  8. Hum! Sooo, why does this App need to scan and upload all of ones contacts to their server (which “becomes their property” according to the EULA)? Something “rotten in Denmark” here, or more appropriately Burlington, MASS!!

PS Clearly there is data mining going on here so where is Phil the App Store Cop when you need him? I’d rather pay for the App and keep my private contacts, well, PRIVATE!!!

    • Just to be fare, here is the explanation from their blog:
“We only upload contact names, no email addresses, to improve the recognition of those names overtime. Private information is secure per our strict compliance policies across the organization, and it will not be sold to third-parties.”

      —-
It appears that the text to speech crunching is done via their servers and not in the Phone itself (why?). Yikes! They got your contacts and every word you’ve ever uttered using this App. WOW! There must be a better way…

    • Straight from the horse’s mouth:

      “Use of Data Collection
All products and all studies, reports, analyses and other data, information or materials created in whole or part using Data shall be and remain the sole property of Nuance. None of the Data will be returned to you. As its proprietary information, Nuance intends to keep the Data confidential. Furthermore, Nuance intends to use the Data for the purpose of developing and enhancing the Software, future versions of the Software and/or related or similar software (“the Purpose”). The voluntary policies that Nuance intends to follow to maintain the confidentiality of the Data include the following: (a) sharing the Data only with employees, agents, consultants, or officers of Nuance with a need to know to carry out the Purpose (“Authorized Persons”), and (b) requiring such Authorized Persons to enter into written confidentiality agreements with Nuance when, in Nuance’s sole judgment, such written confidentiality agreements are necessary to safeguard the confidentiality of the Data. PLEASE NOTE, HOWEVER, that Nuance’s handling or treatment of the Data in accordance with this Section 1 is entirely voluntary and, therefore, NUANCE WILL HAVE NO LIABILITY TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PARTY FOR FAILURE TO KEEP THE DATA CONFIDENTIAL OR TO OTHERWISE HANDLE OR TREAT THE DATA IN ANY MANNER.”

      • Wow, that quite worrisome and will keep me from using this App.

  9. Been waiting impatiently for something like this to come along, so upon reading the article I raced to the AppStore, and… as other international users have remarked, not available! There are few more frustrating thingsthan to become excited about something only to discover it is available exclusively to the US.

  10. not available in Australia :(

  11. Not in the Canadian store. Why am I surprised? We pay more for everything here and get so little back from Apple. This common phenomenon gets so tiring!

  12. This is really nice. Now I can dictate an email while driving… and send it when traffic stops.

I don’t think the fear of Dragon “holding my data” is warranted. Don’t we already store contacts, bookmarks and documents on the web… I don’t intend to be disagreeable, but should we watch out for those evil GPS devices too?

  13. I don’t think nuance are stealing your data… as far as I can tell they are collecting a global dictionary of peoples names so they can improve the quality of their speech recognition engine.

    • Apple really need to get this in all the App Stores not just the US one…..it is’nt even avaliable to Appul.ous

  14. DO NOT DOWNLOAD data collection App!!!!!
