Can A Quality Game Be Made In 72 Hours? Sure It Can, Its Name Is Project 72 – Plus A Chance To Win A Copy

The just-released casual space game, Project 72, is the result of what four guys from Venice California were able to accomplish in as little as 72 hours, and surprisingly, the results are quite impressive.

project72_screen1As the story goes, the guys at Dogtown Studios, a subdivision of Moyo Studios, the publisher of quite a few iPhone apps, sat down to discuss what project they should take on next.  At first they came up with challenging themselves to make an iPhone game in as little as seven days, but since they had previous game development experience, they decided to try and accomplish the feat in only three days, or 72 hours.

Project 72 officially started at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 5th and finished up on Friday, January 8th at 8:00 PM.  The team was able to complete and submit the game in the allotted amount of time, and what you see in the App Store is the result.  But unlike most games of this time limited nature, Project 72 is rather polished and fun.

Project 72 will have you guiding a rocket ship through space in order to go the furthest distance without running out of fuel or getting sucked into a black hole.  The environment contains asteroids, UFOs, satellites, and space debris, all of which can slow you down and even take down your ship, so you must try to avoid them at all costs while collecting rocket fuel.  Power-ups such as shields and nitro boosters are scattered around space to aid you in your mission as well.

The game is entirely accelerometer controlled, so tilting your device from side to side simply steers your ship.  The game also features an online leader board to compare your distances with the rest of the world.

Project 72 is now available in the App Store for $.99.

  25. Sounds like a fun project. I wonder if they had filmed the entire process to see if they had previously thought of the idea/mechanics/etc of the game or not.

  26. @Harrison Ford: 4 days = 96 hours. This was completed in 72 hours, or 3 days. Even more impressive.

I did a game called Project 1. Didn’t go too far as people complained about seeing only the game title splash screen and no gameplay content. Hey, what do you expect for one hour’s worth of work? I am not EA!

    Game me, plz!

  35. I’m just fascinated by the game, 72 hours is such a short amount of game and the game looks like it is so polished. It takes a great developer to accomplish a great game and an even better one to complete it in 72 hours. Virtual pat on the back to the developers.

  36. I love this little game!
