IM5 Instant Messaging Apps Comparison Chart

IM apps are very popular, there is however a whole bunch of them out there and it can be hard to decide which one will suit you the best.

We already put together an AppGuide to help you out with your decision, but some of you asked for a purely objective feature chart comparison. Well there it is (click to enlarge).

  1. I’m afraid this list is incomplete without Palringo.

  2. Yeah but palringo really? I’m glad I made the right decision in beejive a long time ago right when push was coming out. It’s really worth the money because your not going to be let down with it’s well put together layout and I haven’t ran into any problems or bugs

  3. yup beejive is the best one o have period

  4. There’s a mistake. Yahoo messenger DOES have landscape texting/viewing

  5. looks to me IM+ Got better than Beejive because of its price and features

    • ok @cool buy im+ i beat you’ll wish u didnt beejive is the best hands down

  6. I belive the chart has an error yahoo msger app does have landscape mode

  7. Yeah, this list can not be complete without Palringo.

So far using all kinds of IM’s on iphone, I think Palringo work the best for me at the moment! I love it when you can just take pictures with it. Beejive gets really slow when you have too many chat history in it! But the surface looks nice!

  8. Problem is, this chart doesn’t talk much about ease of use, load time, or bugs. According to the chart, IM+ is the hands-down winner (save the fact that the price has gone back up to $10), but in actual practice, IM+ happens to be a fairly buggy, slow experience with a muddled layout and semi-obnoxious UI.

Being a communication junkie and having used Beejive, IM+, Trillian, fring, Skype, and the free version of Ebuddy, I can confidently echo the chorus that Beejive is the winner.

  9. You forgot to highlight the lack of an IM+ “Text” feature in orange

  10. I have my business MSN address on BeejiveIM, and 7 days push notifications really come in handy (72 hours or 3 days just isn’t enough, it already happened to me that 3 days have passed without opening it, but never more than 7).

The only downside is that if your address gets disconnected (of which you get notified via push), it won’t reconnect back to the protocol.

  11. Just wondering, which IM application allowed Skype call over 3G network? I tried Skype and Fring but both required Wi-Fi for outgoing Skype call.

  12. Where is Quicksilver on this list? It supports Jabber and, by extension, Google, landscape keyboard, push notifications, etc. There are so many apps missing from this list it’s incredible.

  13. So what exactly does beejive do so much better than even the free version of Palringo?

  14. Once Trillian gets Facebook and landscape support it will be the IM app to rule them all.

  15. I get disconnected from Beejive every 3 hours from Msn or gtalk, that’s really bad :-( is this a bug?

  16. @Elex you have to go into settings and change the disconnect time. go into your iphone settings and down to beejive and at the bottom you’ll see “session timeout”. change the setting on that to whatever you want.

and after using aim, IM+, and beejive, beejive is definitely my favorite and worth the money. i don’t use skype and i have tweetie for twitter, so those two things don’t matter to me. the main thing i needed was google talk support for work, and now it supports group chat rooms which i was very excited about for my AIM. and the 7 days log in time is ace. only time i’m ever disconnected is if the network goes bad. i’d pay the 10 bucks again in a heartbeat.

    • -adding that at the time i bought it was 10 bucks. i see it’s cheaper now. this happens to me all. the. time.

  17. Yes, at least there are 3 apps missing:

    1. AgileMobile IM

    2. Palringo

    3. IMO.IM
