Apple posted the latest version of the iPhone SDK (3.2 beta 3) for its registered developers only to pull it shortly after for unknown reasons. Fortunately, some quick developers managed to get their hands on it in time and here is what we know about it so far:

  • It now includes the photo.app
  • It allows you to pick separate wallpapers for the lock screen and the background
  • Brings a new app binary format, which allows developers to make one file which should run on all iDevices
  • It features an unexplained “camera tab” in the photo.app

Is it camera like in “imported camera roll” or camera like in “there is a camera and you don’t know about it yet” ? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

***Update

Alright, so the camera tab is still present and it’s acting a little strange actually. When you try to access it, you get a dark screen for a couple seconds which then sends you back to the photo tab and the camera tab disappears.

Macrumors also found some new references to zoom, camera flash, and to a front facing camera in the code. As well as this very suggesting graphic:

Very strange…

  1. Gasp… too bad iPad probably won’t come out with a camera. :| But the wallpaper for the background sounds interesting. Hopefully in next OS.

    • I’m getting more and more convinced Apple will pull the iPad out of their sleeve with a camera in it, right before it’s release. Maybe they wanted to use this as a back up weapon, in case there wasn’t enough initial interest in the iPad.

  2. Wouldn’t the Camera feature be related to the camera connection kit? Since you would need to import pictures from the Camera to your pictures library on the device. It would make sense that the pictures app is used not only for viewing your pictures but also for importing. I don’t think there will be a camera built into the device.

  3. Finally, separate wallpapers for lockscreen and background.

  4. Hmmm, that camera thing is weird… Idk would apple make an iPod touch with a camera? It doesn’t seem like it would be a challange for apple just to slap a camera on the iPod touch (they did it for the nano). I doubt the ipad would have a camera, apple just showed it off unless they are savig some secret…. Anyway I’m very excited for background, I have been waiting since version 2.0 for that.

  5. Maybe a camera accessory in the future?

  6. That graphic looks like… No that can’t be, wait… Maybe… VIDEOCALLING
