Mobile Game Developers Prefer The iPhone Over The DS & PSP

It seems like the iPhone/iPod touch ecosystem is constantly gaining momentum as a gaming device.  According to a new study by Game Developer Research, mobile gaming now represents 25 percent of the gaming market, up from 12 percent before the iPhone times.  Furthermore, an impressive 19 percent of all game developers are now writing for the iPhone and iPod touch, almost twice as many as for Sony’s PSP or Nintendo’s DS.

While it’s good news for us, this should get Sony and Nintendo very concerned, especially with the upcoming iPad.

  1. Those devices have buttons for dedicated play. The feel of buttons outweighs a touchscreen. Joysticks will never phase out.

  2. Physical buttons will never leave us because its all pat of the whole game play experience. Sure an iPhone is fun for games but at the end of the day if you want to really play a game you will turn on your 360.

    • Uh, no. It really depends on how you approach gaming. Personally, though I own hundreds of games on my PC, I tend to play more on the iPhone. True, physical controls are a plus, but I would’ve never gotten a DS or a PSP to play while not at home or in front of the PC.

  3. of course they prefer the apple device. Dude, have you seen what happens to half assed games on the PSP/DS? They sell a bit, people notice it is bad, they stop buying. What happens on the iDevice? As long as they promise that the updates are coming, someone will still buy it. Also, the level of dedication someone needs to have to develop something for the DS/PSP is waaaaaay superior compared to the time you develop something for the iDevice (being that most games, unless have an endless mode, will last for 2 hrs), I mean, Project 72 anyone? Add that to the law of minimizing effort and ta-da, people love apple.
