ipad vs psp Sony Exec Thinks Apple Is Boosting PSP Sales

Sony’s Director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller, came up with a line that will make any iDevice owner frown. According to him:

Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.

While I’m still trying to figure out what could possibly a PSP have over an iPod Touch (is it the buttons?), it seems like he’s drawing those conclusions from the fact that PSP’s have been actually selling a lot better over the last two years. Is there a connection though? I doubt it.

  1. Heh.

  2. Well, he’s probably right. The iPod touch is designed best for simple, clever games, while the PSP is for a better gaming experience. For gamers, the PSP is simply a better option

  3. I think PSP will be in big trouble once ipad arrives.
Even iphone is a big threat to PSP.

What? Isn’t it obvious Koller is just cheekily implying that users will feel that Apple’s gaming devices are inadequate n will eventually buy a Sony. Alex, of course he knows there is no connection.. duh? So pls dont bother trying to figure anything more, and no, its not the buttons. sigh.

  5. Well if I didn’t know better, it sure looks wierd playing NFS on a photo frame!

  6. Hey Sony, forget apples. Lets compare oranges to oranges shall we? So how’s those sony/ericsson PHONE SALES? Yea, thought so. You lazy asses, laid around and let some fruity n00bs p0wn you on the cell phone front. So keep singing kumbaya in that circle jirk while “Apptilla the Hun” (yea I just made that up ;^) invades your portable gaming territory. Oh, and good looking out on that PSP noGo (“if you have a UMD, you get a break on the digital download version”) program. Nice move…

  7. I’ve had a PSP for about 3 years and have hardly used it at all. Yes it does have real buttons, but it’s hard to hold and climbsy to use. the only games I can play on it are the two Everybodys Golf games. If I play anything fast twitch the thing flies out of my hand.

otoh I have badly stopped playing games on my iPod touch since I got it three months ago. they are not all casual games either.

  8. Sony should manufacture the psp into a phone then that would be a challenge for Apple. As it stands my psp is collecting dust.
