Following yesterday’s update on iPad international availability; Apple is slowly starting to publish local press releases featuring pricing.
iPad prices, however, slightly differ from country to country and tend to be a bit hard to find. Fortunately, Italian Apple-centric blog SetteB.it has done a great job compiling all these in one chart, including taxes and Euro equivalents for a convenient overlook (featured above). As you can see, Apple has clearly made an effort to keep the prices low. Even the German iPad, the most expensive one on the chart, is only about a 100€ pricier than its American equivalent. A difference mostly explainable by various local taxes.
How do you folks feel about these prices?

Keeping the prices down? Apple is charging way to much money for these things, the base model only costs about 260 to make. Im not picking one up till the prices drop and the gigs are better.
And I suppose you think Apple should sell it for $299… What a jerk!!
I think apple should be selling the 16 gigs 100 dollars cheaper or less, this thing doesn’t even have a camera for crying out loud! Why would i drop over 500 bucks for a product not very different from my iPod touch.
So having an opinion means I’m a jerk? Aren’t you lovely.
Fortunately, as a consumer, you have the choice to buy one or not based on your own opinions. Apple has sold over 1,000,000 in under a month so obviously a TON of people think it’s well worth the price.
I hear there are some shitty Android tablets coming out for around $200, maybe pick one of those up if you don’t think Apple has earned your money.
even if 10mil ppl give their cash in exchange for an ipad doesn’t mean it isn’t overpriced. it’s clear you’ve never bought different components and assembled you’re own computer. you’d be veeeery surprised on how cheap hardware is when you buy it separately, the way that apple does. not even mentioning the bulk discounts.
more info: 1ghz single core, single thread cpu combined with a mobo w/ integrated graphics card, some 512mb ram, some 16gb flash memory and a multi touch display for 500$? yap, it’s a huge huge ripoff hardware wise (in comparison my comp sent me back 700$ and features, among other stuff, an i5 750, 4gb ram, 1gb video card and 640gb of storage). also r&d for the ipad should be pretty low because of preexisting ipod touch and iphone. luckily for apple they built an extremely successful app store.
The trick is that Apple has a certain way to develop their products.
Let’s say I manage to put a device together that costs in the production only $50 and the final product is so good and unique that everybody wants to buy it, then I also would not sell it for just $60. I would sell it for $200 and make a ton of profit. And I would not be shamed of it.
There is practically no competition out there for Apple’s iDevices. If it would be so easy, then all those multi-billion dollar companies would have competing products. They don’t! Why? It’s because Apple did something unique and they are entitled to make some revenue of it.
Go for it Apple!!
Another ignorant person who equates 3rd party estimates of raw material costs to retail prices.
iSuppli has no idea what it costs. How do you calculate the price of the A4 chip? The R & D costs to develop it?
If you can’ t afford it, fine. If you think it’s overpriced for your budget fine. If it doesn’t meet your needs, fine.
Just spare us the bullshit about how you are somehow being ripped off because iSuppli guessed what the part cost of an iPad is.
In case you are interested, it is clear from Apple’s earnings reports that they see about 30% profit from hardware overall.
man, the a4 is an arm cortex a8 cpu with added l2 cache and some improvement in the ram bus width. also with a basic gpu, powervr series 5 on board. it’s extremely simple to manufacture (45nm, single core, arm architecture) and also extremely cheap. it’s like going back in time and discovering you’ve got a pentium 3 inside your fresh ipad, number-crunching wise. again, only from a hardware point of view it’s a huuuge ripoff. thank god for the app store.
Are those US prices off a bit?
$499/$599/$699
$629/$729/$829 ?
Sales tax?
Hmmm..maybe, but sales tax varies a lot from not just state to state, but by city/county.
So if components cost $260, how much do you think R&D cost to create the iPad. It’s a little naive to quote the manufacture cost of an iPad and ignore the development costs associated with software and hardware, which would be massive.
lol. ever heard of the iphone? let’s calculate r&d for a piece of hardware that’s identical (except the size
), to preexisting, established products.
Typical UK pricing well above the rest.
What are you talking about? In the UK we’re only paying about 2.3% more than the US, and Germany is paying much more than the rest. Did you even look at the prices?
Spain is the cheapest in Europe!!
Ya these ipads only cost 260 in hardware what about all the technology inside it the big touch screen the months of salaries for all the individuals whom worked on it. The fact that it’s only around 200 dollars more than a net book and costs around the same as a 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch did. Also many of these countries pay their workers more and have higher money values so I think apple is doing a great job at stay competitive considering that everyone right now it dying to copy apples product and price point but none can.
I’m not to worry about how apple pays its customers, that 30+ billion in the bank pretty much covers it. These things must be cheaper if apple wants them to go mainstream.
Well what is inside ipad… A big ipod. It didn’t cost apple much to develop it. So entry price is about $300 – fact. But I still doubt that it should cost even THAT much.
All I’m reading here is a big old: “SCREW YOU, SCANDINAVIA!”
Seriously, though, how did not even one Scandinavian country make it onto this list? Not even a mention of when it might become available here.
The canadian prices are off from what was just published in today’s Ottawa citizen.
The CDN prices are 549, 649, 749 for wifi and 679, 779, 879 for 3g models.
Amazing how much companies (not just apple) charge for small amounts of memory difference. $100 per increment is insane. Pretty healthy profit margin going on there.
touche!
Very interesting, but I think you got the Japanese pricing all wrong.
The price in Japan starts at 48960 yen.
The price for Wifi iPad:
16GB-48960 JPY
32GB-59040 JPY
64GB-68880 JPY
Wifi+3G:
16GB – 58320JPY
32GB – 67920JPY
64GB – 77280 JPY
Nobi
Great product, BUY ONE!
It pisses me off that you can never see the pictures in appadvice iPhone app. How we meant to see the prices ? Pinch to zoom?
Just tap the image and it will go full screen!
what does “full screen” mean to you?
Don’t think I’ll be buying one just yet. I’ll wait for the price to drop and the apps to prove themselves really useful. I mean who needs a fart machine.
I need a magnifying glass to read that table. I can’t enlarge it on my iPhone and if I turn it sideways I just have to turn my head sideways too as this app doesn’t support rotation. Perhaps I should just buy an ipad so that I can read these things or attach a magnifying glass to my iPhone with elastic bands…
