Ever since Apple authorized VoIP calls over 3G back in January, there’s been a lot of rumbling around when will Skype flip the switch on its own app. Well, it’s finally here folks. Skype has just released the 2.0 version of the iPhone skype app which allows you to place calls over 3G networks. But hold on, there is a catch.
Indeed, while Skype to Skype calls over 3G will be free until the end of August, Skype has announced that they will then charge you a fee for the feature. It’s a huge surprise as Skype to Skype calls have always been free of charge and well, the feature doesn’t really cost them extra. Also, it’s not really standard practice and while we don’t know how this will be priced for now, it’s a huge bummer.
That’s not very nice…

Hopefully, they’ll place the price of the fee as a one-time purchase for the app. Say it’s $5.00 – we’d just pay $5.00 for the app and have all working features. That’s really disappointing of Skype, I always thought they were the good guys.
Update information states “Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least the end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee.”
I’m a little disappointed at this to be honest. We’ll just have to wait and see how small the fee will be.
Another reason for jailbreaking. Look up My3G
You can use the Whistle app and make phone calls to anyone, so why pay for Skype calls. Deal breaker for me!!!
I can’t believe they are doing this. Why!? Is it still going to be free over wifi? It just sounds totally out of Skype’s character. It’s like that loyal hound dog has turned on it’s owner that you occasionally hear in the news. Put that doggie down, dude.
I get a great laugh at these articles + comments. Anything not free is Satan.
I would say it depends on the fee but most are bitching without even knowing what it is. Than there are comments like “Another reason for jailbreaking.”
I know there are more pathetic excuses for theft but “I just don’t want to pay that” isn’t likely considered brilliant. Of course, that’s the primary purpose of jailbreaking anyway.
It’s an even bigger laugh on classified forum sections. “You could only get 50% of what you paid anyway, so that’s what I’m offering.” when buying but when it comes to selling “It’s brand new, I want 99% of what I paid, that’s final.”
Good laughs, good laughs.
it is Satan, because it’s greed, in this case anyway because it’s not costing them any running costs so why should we keep paying them all the time? If it was just a one off fee, that’s fine, I’d understand that but not on a regular basis.
I agree with you Odie.
If your jailbroken like I am, just use 3G Unrestrictor and you can take as many calls of 3G for free as you want.
I can’t believe this
Wow how lame. Hey Skype, you just shot yourself in the foot with this one. Anyone want to bet it’s free within 6 months?
Hey Skype!
Thanks but no thanks. I don’t need your service that bad. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ll be successful in finding some suckers to pay for your overrated service.
Wrong. Not August- end of the year.
From Skype page in the App Store:
What’s New in Version 2.0.0

- Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free *until the end of 2010* , after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
They’ve just changed it
