Review: Max Injury 2 - Plus A Chance To Win Four Copies

Overview

The ragdoll physics based game Max Injury has a sequel which amps up every aspect of the game, especially the amount of pain the crash test dummy Max has to endure. You swipe to start Max on a different course, and now try to take advantage of all new weapons to maximize the pain. There are bombs, flame throwers, shotguns, jet packs and breakable glass that help in reaching point thresholds or completing objectives.

Features

The sequel to Max Injury has tons more levels with 42 in total compared to only 16 in the original. A new element is that after you swipe you can control Max with tilt which changes the strategy quite a bit. OpenFeint is included again for online high scores and achievements.

The Good

Max Injury 2 is all about dishing out the pain with whatever is provided. It's a nice step up from the original by providing so much more variety. Of the 42 levels there are loads of different objectives, obstacles, and layouts which is especially noteworthy because the original's few levels blended together. After playing through every level in the game there is no doubt it will take you quite awhile, and it will be an enjoyable time. In one level you're tossing Max down a huge ramp, and the next you're using a jet back to slam into bombs while avoiding walls. There is always something new for each level that will keep it fresh throughout, and make you want to keep going. The ragdoll physics isn't the most spot on, but it's definitely adequate to get the point across, and see Max reacting appropriately. It's always great to see ragdolls damaged going through insane courses, and Max injury is the only app that has been able to do it successfully. Stair Dismount is as realistic as they come, but there isn't the extreme courses as there are in Max Injury 2. The game can keep a smile on your face if you're even remotely interested in ragdoll physics. OpenFeint also helps with the replay factor with multiple score tables and achievements.

The Bad

The controls aren't as good as they could be, and do get in the way from full enjoyment of the game. You have to concentrate on your swipe for the game to pick it up exactly as you intend. Still though sometimes the game picks up a hard swipe as a nudge, and this can get frustrating when it happens multiple times in one session. The damage indicators aren't as fine tuned as you would like either. It's seems that Max hits extremely hard in certain areas, and it doesn't register as much damage as you would think. In other instances Max does indeed hit something, but no score is indicted. This aspect is really shallow compared to the intricate damage indicator in Stair Dismount. The visuals aren't the greatest, but the sounds are much worse. There is no soundtrack, and the sound effects are few and far between.

The Verdict

Max Injury 2 improves on most aspect of a solid game, and is definitely fun whether you've played the first or new to the game. There is plenty to do that will last a significant time, and there is plenty of variability to keep you coming back. There are some aspects that aren't designed as well as could be leaving the game feeling less than whole.
