Steve Jobs: "If ten guys rob a bank and don’t get caught, that isn’t much of a defense if you do"

July 10, 2010

The corollary of the well-known lack of clear written rules in the App Store's review process is a certain lack of consistency. Sometimes, certain apps make it through when they shouldn't, often it's the opposite. As reported by Macstories, this is pretty much what happened to Trailers this week. Based on Apple's official trailer RSS feed, it allowed you to enjoy movie trailers in a good looking mobile-friendly and native way. Unfortunately, it wasn't in Apple's taste which decided to reject the app for scraping their iTunes feed.

The decision came down particularly hard on trailer's developer Jonah Grant. Especially so because the App Store is full of apps that take advantage of Apple's official RSS and iTunes feeds. So, like so many before him, he took it to Steve Jobs himself (full thread). The answer he apparently got is probably not the one he should have gotten, as this free app clearly should be in the App Store. Yet, this is some pure Steve Jobs and it explains particularly well once again how the review process sometimes just doesn't work:

If ten guys rob a bank and don’t get caught, that isn’t much of a defense if you do.
