QuickAdvice: Osmos

Osmos ($2.99) by Hemisphere Games allows you to be an ever expanding single celled organism, but that isn’t an experience limited to the iPad anymore. Osmos is now on the iPhone with a smaller scale, but the same controls of tapping to eject mass to propel yourself, pinching to zoom in and out, and flicking to alter time. The game features the same content as the iPad version with 27 odyssey levels and 72 arcade levels.

The game has eight game modes: ambient, antimatter, solar, sentient, impasse, warped chaos, epicycles, and repulsor. Not only is the content the same, but the experience is the same as well. It’s unique gaming experience that is slow and methodical rather rushed and hectic.

You simply have one objective which is to absorb objects smaller than you to grow in size to be able to absorb ones that were larger than you. As you progress you will face bigger and bigger enemies with smaller objects fewer and far between making it that much tougher to increase in size. Then you will reach the more difficult and more enjoyable alternate game modes where you will deal with orbiting a large mass, trying to absorb orbs that repel away from you, and deal with antimatter that decrease your size if you touch them.

The most difficult and most fun is playing against sentient cells that have the same goal as you, and are trying to beat you to it. There is so much to do in this game, and once you start you’ll want to keep going through the entire odyssey, and then go for multiple difficulties in arcade mode. There is so much variability between the modes with each one requiring a completely different strategy.

It looks great running on the iPhone without much of a loss of art quality from iPad to iPhone. Even with the difference in size the iPhone version plays practically the same which shows quite an achievement in game design. The greatness of the iPad game is now available to all iPhone and iPod Touch owners, and they should rejoice.

Osmos is an absolute must on the iPhone for only $2.99, and you’ll definitely be absorbed by it.
