iOS 4.1 HDR Camera Feature To Be iPhone 4 Only, But Jailbreak Fix Is Coming

September 7, 2010
It looks like Apple will be restricting its upcoming HDR Camera feature to iPhone 4 owners only. Of course, this could always change, but as TIPB points out this morning, HDR photography requires your iPhone to take three almost simultaneous pictures to function. This is something older iPhones just might not be able to do fast enough. Or at least, not fast enough in Apple's opinion. It's understandable, yet still unfortunate, as both the iPhone 3G and the 3GS were still widely sold and available just a few months ago and I'm sure some folks are still picking up 3GS'. Anyway, we're finding out today that all hope is not lost, as once again, there will be a jailbreak fix for that. Developed by @cdevwill, an upcoming Cydia tweak announced this morning will allow you to enable this native feature on the 3G and 3GS. Just like you can currently hack your iPhone 3G to multitask and display wallpapers. We don't expect the performance to be great, but well, it's still better than nothing. However, if you're not up for jailbreaking your device, note that 3GS owners can always try to rely on apps like Pro HDR, which should do the trick.
