The IS Drive BitTorrent App Is No More

October 6, 2010
The IS Drive BitTorrent downloading companion app we told you about a few days ago has now been pulled from the App Store. It lasted three days, which is longer than usual in cases like this. IS Drive, was an app that allowed you to control your remote premium ImageShack torrent downloading account. It didn't state that capability explicitly, which is most likely how it made it through the app approval process. It was clearly intended to help download files over BitTorrent, and as we all know, BitTorrent is mostly being used for illegal purposes. IS Drive's approval had us believe that Apple had decided to go further with their new flexible approval policies (and no longer refuse BitTorrent-related apps). Clearly this wasn't the case, and it reminds us once again: there are still some lines Apple won't let you cross in the App Store. Apple did contact its developer before pulling the plug, and as he tweeted, it seems like the decision is final:
Just got a call from Apple. They're taking IS Drive down. I'm seeing what I can do. I have a feeling I won't be able to change their mind.
It's too bad, as the app didn't do anything illegal directly, it just indirectly let you control a service that was questionable. Who knows, we might see it on the jailbreak side soon, which will probably be just fine for those who use something like ImageShack. What do you think? Was this the right thing for Apple to do? [Thanks to @lovesteve11 for the tip!]
