Wine connoisseurs can already order their favorite beverage using an iPad at some restaurants. Now, there is an iPhone/iPod touch app that will tell you how good that Pinot Blanc sitting on the shelf at the local wine store really is.

The Snooth Wine Pro app offers image-based wine searching capabilities from your Apple device.  Created by the social networking site of the same name, the app is backed by a huge wine database. According to Wikipedia, Snooth has over 1.7 million wine reviews across 300,000 wines.

Using the app, your iPhone scans the barcode of the wine you are holding. It then shows you the closest match possible. Year of production, wine ratings (called the SnoothRank) and the estimated price of the wine are also shown. This way, it is possible to see if the same wine can be found nearby for a lower price.

Best of all, Snooth is offering two versions of its app: the $4.99 Wine Pro, which includes the image scanning capabilities and the free Wine app. Both include amazing features that make this a must-have app for anyone that enjoys knowing more about wine.

The best feature is the Search for a wine option. This allows you to narrow the list of wines you are searching for by Color, Price, Country, Flavor and Varietal. Once you select your criteria, the app will present a list of matching wines. You’ll see each wine’s year of production, overall SnoothRank and the closest place to find the wine, along with its current price. You can even rate the wine from within the app.

The app can also direct you to the nearest wine stores, both in map and list view. You can setup a wishlist to keep track of wines you’ve been hoping to find.

Since both apps are tied directly to the Snooth website, you’ll need to establish a free account to get started. This process is quick, asking you only to create a user account including an email address and password. Your new login can be used on the website as well.

Both the Snooth Wine Pro app and free Wine app are available today in the App Store. I would suggest you download the free version first, and when you are ready, spend the $4.99 on the Pro version.
